It's not often that the CarBuzz spies are able to snap something like this camouflaged Lexus RX. Japanese automakers do an incredible job of keeping their upcoming models on lockdown, but this shows it's not always possible. The RX is due for a makeover and Lexus was testing it on the road in Germany, letting us see the revised face and a very new interior. Don't Expect Lexus To Rock The RX Boat CarBuzz/Valnet The RX has been the top-selling Lexus since just about forever, and the totals aren't even close. It's no surprise, the model essentially created the premium crossover segment (without Jeep's off-road compromises) and it has been going strong for nearly 30 years since then, beating even more headline-grabbing vehicles like BMW's X5.When Lexus makes changes to the RX, they're normally small. Progressive. Yes, each generation looks evolved from its predecessor, but sometimes the visible evolution is a very small one.The latest RX hit the market for 2023, and that has it due for a refresh for model year 2027, so it's not a surprise to see it being put through its paces. That also lets us see the changes, even if they're small. The exterior, for example, looks to have just one change behind the A-Pillar, and that's a rear bumper with more body-color paint and less black plastic.Changes to the front bumper are more extensive. Lexus has made the lower center opening wider and shorter, and added inlets at the leading edge of the front lip. Parts of the grille mesh behind the Lexus L badge appear to have been filled in, but other than that, this is the same RX we're now used to. New Screen Marks New Infotainment Tech CarBuzz/Valnet Look through the passenger window of this right-drive model and you can see the real changes. The current RX uses what was the brand's latest infotainment system when it launched. Now Lexus has a new system, which debuted in the 2026 ES. It separates the screen from the dashboard, removing it from that bezel and making it freestanding. The ES has a 14-inch screen that has added enhanced voice recognition and a split-screen function. The ES has a few haptic buttons below the screen, and we're hoping the RX will have those as well. Lexus could give the refreshed ES the brand's newest Safety Sense driver assist suite. Lexus Safety System+ 4.0 launched with the ES and adds "more natural and human-like" interventions and refinements to existing features. We don't expect a surprise EV with this refresh. When Lexus announced the latest ES, that electric variant was widely seen as out of the blue. Lexus has other EVs on the market now, including the three-row TZ it announced earlier in May, which joins the RZ in the company's electric crossover fleet.Instead, expect Lexus to offer the same drivelines the RX comes with now. Those include the gas-only four-cylinder RX 350 as well as the RX 350h hybrid and RX 500h hybrid with its 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The RX is also available with a plug in the form of the RX 450h+ PHEV.Look for the refreshed model to launch later this year or in early 2027.2027 Lexus RX spy photo (7)
