Jaguar Type 01The brand wants the Type 01 four-door GT to take the limelight, but more models are coming soon.Jaguar didn't say when, but the Type 01 will be followed by another model, likely an SUV or crossover. It will likely ride on the same JEA self-developed platform. For now, Jaguar says it wants the Type 01 to take up the spotlight. It's a bold strategy to relaunch a brand with one car, especially one that's so niche. Love it or hate it, the Jaguar Type 01 definitely stands out; the four-door GT (don't call it a sedan; JLR executives corrected me when I did) is such a striking-looking car. But with an expected price tag in the six figures, I can't imagine the Type 01 ever being a strong volume seller.Well, it won't be alone, though. During the briefing for the Type 01 in Gaydon, England, Jaguar's executives said that the Type 01 is merely the beginning of Jaguar's rebirth, and that its next vehicle is coming soon. Don't expect it to take after the Jaguars of yore. What you see on the Type 01 is a preview of what to expect on all future Jaguar models going forward. Now, what does that look like? It's not super clear yet, but I expect it to follow the same luxury-modernist language as the Type 01. While in the UK, I spoke with some Jaguar executives, designers, and engineers and learned a lot about what the brand wants to be going forward. And while there may have been some missteps with the original marketing materials, these folks are still very much in love with what the Type 01 stands for, and what it means for the brandJaguar Type 01"It's very modern, it's very bold. We're marketing the sense of the…big idea; it's about being unafraid to break convention, or refuse to compromise," said Rawdon Glover, the Managing Director of Jaguar, when discussing the marketing concepts for the Type 01 sedan.Glover said that sometimes brands get too granular too quickly, and thus they're not letting people understand or buy into the big picture about what the brand stands for. Of course, that's a lot of myth-making and marketing jargon, but I think he has a point. In an era of same-y crossovers and sedans, the Type 01's off-the-wall styling feels unique and refreshing. A crossover or SUV that falls into the ethos that Glover described could end up being one of the most unique cars on the road. However, I wouldn't expect Jaguar's next entry to be cheap. The Type 01 will start around $130,000, and represents Jaguar's attempt at resetting its image. The company wants to once again be seen as a high-dollar luxury brand that sits above BMW and Audi. This was spelled out during the briefing, where Jaguar planned to increase its level of service by marketing to rich young people with money, and thus creating white-glove level expectations that won't easily be matched by a lower-cost luxury brand. This includes allowing for test drives that are days long that could start or stop at, say, your favorite country club. Providing that service isn't cheap. So whatever Jaguar makes next, don't expect it to land anywhere near the old E-Pace budget luxury crossover.Jaguar's representatives said that announcements about the brand's next moves will come at a later date. For now, they want the Type 01 to be the focus of Jaguar's new era.The Range Rover Sport Electric Is Here To Take On The Lucid GravityThe China-Market 'Freelander' Is The Rivian R2 Competitor You Can't HaveJaguar Type 01 Interior Revealed: No Rear Window, No Rear-View Mirror, And 'Hidden' TechJaguar's Electric Sedan Prototype Seems Pretty Great.
