Scotty ReissJaguar is back and more posh and powerful than ever. We just got a look at this ground-breaking luxury car and a look into the brand's future. When Jaguar re-emerged with a new model two years ago, the pushback was loud. The concept the company showed, the Type 00, was bold, brash and unlike any Jaguar we'd ever seen. It was shown in bright pastel colors and featured a new logo that was more than simply a departure from the heritage; it was a new corner, turned.Skip ahead to today, and the world has just seen the production version of that car and now, everyone is paying rapt attention. I just spent the morning day the Jaguar Type 01, getting a close look, exploring its interior and talking with Jaguar's designers and engineers. This is what this powerful, future-forward EV is all about.More news, direct to your inbox: Get our newsletterThis story is 100% human-researched and written based on actual first-person knowledge, extensive experience and expertise on the subject of cars and trucks. The brand's last new debut in 2018 was the I-Pace, a fully electric compact SUV that still drives millions of miles a year now as Waymo self-driving cars. The Type 01 advances that story, filling in the details with a posh, hushed cabin, more than 1,000 HP and a design unlike anything on four wheels (and decidedly sleeker and more minimalist than the Waymo I-Pace).This is how so many women are building cars—and careers, and it's all on our podcast.Jaguar Takes Its Place In the Ultra Luxury Car MarketThe rear end of the Jaguar Type 01 is quite distinctWith a price tag starting at $130,000 (about $160,000 for the prototype we toured), the Type 01 will sit firmly in the ultra-luxury car category. But the market has demonstrated demand; the Range Rover Electric rethought how EVs are built; the debut of the Genesis GV90 generated instant orders; the Bentley Torcal has ignited demand for ultra luxe EV SUVs and the Rolls-Royce Spectre is the company's second best-selling model. These models, in addition to creating demand for top-tier luxury cars, also illustrate the demand for innovation and power.Watch: Our tour and test drive of the Range Rover Electric!Electric Power, Jaguar Style, and a First: Jaguar ModePower in your hands in the Jaguar Type 01Probably the biggest news is that the Jaguar Type 01 will not only deliver electric driving, but do it in true Jaguar style. The company drove its older classic models and sought to replicate that: A perfect balance of power and weight so that a large car can drive with effortless ease.To do that, the company needed to add motors on the rear and one on the front, all of which results in about 1,300 HP (though there are varying levels of power delivered at different times, so the company is saying 1,000+ HP.) To capture that perfect balance and power, the company has programmed what it calls Jaguar Mode, the default drive mode that sits between comfort and sport for an optimal fast, yet gliding feel on the road. The Jaguar Type 01 Looks Like the Concept Type 00The fastback design of the Jaguar Type 01When Jaguar rolled out the Type 00, experts and pundits assumed it was purely a concept that either was a placeholder to keep the conversation going until they had a new model to show, or it was a fantastical creation that would be boiled down into some design basics that would have a place in a new model. But, neither happened. Instead, Jaguar crafted the concept into reality, adding two more doors and a hatchback, a few more creased lines and an interior that will pass muster with safety regulators. But the initial premise a flat front defined by four lines of light and a face composed of horizontal lines held true. As did the proportions, the fastback design and the huge wheels —23" wheels to be precise — and a low center of gravity that can deliver a sporty experience. Jaguar even reconfigured the battery pack to ensure the Type 01's low stance. The rear end design also held; a rectangular slatted panel with two red light strips at the top sit squared off on the sides and draw your eye up to where the rear window would be. Though, there's no rear window; Jaguar eliminated that in order to preserve the design of the Type 01.There Is a Nod to Jaguar's Heritage, Though There's Only OneA brass panel on the exterior of the Jaguar Type 01 features a classic Jaguar LeaperPerhaps the only hint at the brand's past is the Leaper, or jaguar in motion, that is seen on front panels forward of the front doors and lining the top of the door panels. The Leaper is etched into brass giving a subtle nod to the brand's heritage but also, adding a hefty feel of gravity to the modern iteration. The brass, which is subtly textured and satiny in its finish, feels modern in its use; in fact, if you weren't told the panel is brass, you probably wouldn't guess—it's that advanced in its look and feel.A Bespoke Type 01 Is In the FutureThe interior of the Jaguar Type 01 feels like a posh pod of elegance 2The prototype of the Type 01 that Jaguar showed was painted a glowy satin silver paint, a color that was created for the prototype four years ago when the company's designers began working on the model. But since silver, even a beautiful hue with subtle light play, isn't everyone;'s cup of tea, the company will offer some special options. First, there are two first edition colors, part of the company's Chromatic Moments: London Red and French Ultramarine Blue. A result of a hand-painting process, Jaguar will produce only 60 models (30 of each) and they are sure to become collectors editions. But buyers who want to specify different colors, inside and out, will be able to. The interior we saw on the prototype will be the top-tier palette available on the first models built, but the company will soon offer a bespoke design plan that will allow buyers to make their Type 01 their own.A New Logo Marks Jaguar's FutureThe new logo is seen on the wheels of the Jaguar Type 01One of the more subtle but brilliant details in the Type 01 is a new secondary logo, seen in the JR, or inverted Js on the Type 01's wheels. If you look closely at the logo you'll notice it's either two J's juxtaposed, or the j and r from the new word logo — which is really what it is, but it can be interpreted however you'd like to see it.The new brand mark follows Range Rover, which added a similar RR logo to its top-line models last year, similar to what we've seen from brands like YSL, Hermès and Gucci, adding their logo initials to belts, handbags and more.Inside, the Cabin is Quiet Pod of PoshThe rear cargo area of the Jaguar Type 01Climbing into the Jaguar Type 01 is to instantly feel refined; under your feet is a woven floor covering (we won't call this carpet) that lines the floors as well as the lower portions of the doors and side panels. From there, Jaguar uses an engineered fabric called Neograin; it fits and feels like leather but offers a seamless — literally seamless, as there are no seams — taut fit on the seats, panels and headrests. The look is ultra elegant and slim; the reduction of heft that leather requires lends to flatter surfaces and slimmer panels inside the cabin.Running the length of the cabin between the driver's side and passenger's side seats is a spine: A long, linear panel that houses controls and storage and acts as an arm rest. The spine takes a natural position in the front seat but is less familiar to rear seat passengers. Though, I sat in the rear seat and found it quite comfortable and welcome. Plus, it houses a control screen for climate, which I thought was clever.Redefined Electronics Maintain the Quiet Feel Inside the Jaguar Type 01The front cabin in the Jaguar Type 01To maintain the sleekness of the front cabin, Jaguar minimized the screens in the Type 01. There's a linear screen that runs from the driver's side to the middle of the dashboard, and extended against the windshield at the center of the cabin is a rear view camera screen. This allows the driver to keep a constant eye — at eye level — on traffic and activity behind the car. Jaguar reports that due to US regulations, an actual rear view mirror is required, even though there's not a rear window, so at the very least the driver will be able to shoot a glance at rear seat passengers.A Bespoke Approach To ElectrificationThe front seat of the Jaguar Type 01To ensure that the Jaguar Type 01 hits all the points that Jaguar wanted to make with the Type 01, the company developed its own battery system— Range Rover did a similar thing with the Range Rover Electric, though the two are built on completely different platforms. The 'bespoke' battery pack allows for a lower center of gravity, unlike most EVs that have a higher seating position in order to accommodate the batteries. Then, in order to ensure the Type 01 drives with perfect balance and effortless power, the company decided to power it with three motors: one on each rear wheel and one on the front axle. The result is 1,300 HP, all wheel drive and rear wheel steering, all of which adds to the agility and capability of the Type 01.And, it adds to the Type 01 taking a seat in the ultra luxury car world. The company has just begun taking orders and will begin building and deliveries will begin in 2027. Jaguar dealers are expected to have demo models on hand, and the company will hold drive events so that potential buyers can get a peek for themselves at the novel innovation that is the future of Jaguar.
