Justin Rose finished in a tie for 65th in his first tournament with McLaren clubs. The British company has introduced two different series of golf irons. Several golfing accessories are also offered, including gloves, hats, and bags. There is, apparently, a logical next step after mastering Formula 1 and engineering supercars that bend physics into a pretzel. That step, McLaren has decided, is golf clubs. The move has been a long time coming, and McLaren has enlisted Justin Rose to do the promotional heavy lifting. Rose finished third at last month’s Masters using Callaway and TaylorMade equipment, then tied for 65th in his first outing with the new McLaren clubs over the weekend. So the launch has not, strictly speaking, started well. As far as golf clubs go, the ones from McLaren Golf are exceptionally expensive, although that doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Two versions of the McLaren irons are available, Series 1 and Series 3. Each iron costs $375, with Series 1 models aimed at elite players, while Series 3 is intended for non-professional golfers. All of the irons use metal injection molding in their construction. The company has yet to share details about the drivers and woods it is also believed to be developing. Not only are the McLaren Golf irons expensive, but their accessories are too. McLaren is asking $495 for one of its bags, up to $100 for a hat, and $160 for headcovers for a golfer’s driver or putter. It goes without saying that if you see someone at your local course with McLaren clubs, you know they’ve got money. Either that or they’ve just made a very poor financial decision.
