2027 Silverado Brings New V-8s to the Truck Wars ChevroletWhile the Ford F-150 is the undisputed darling of the American truck market, it's General Motors that truly dominates the sales charts with the combination of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra models. Now, after eight years on sale in its current form, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is finally embarking on a new era, with updated styling, fresh tech features, and two next-generation V-8 engines slated to join the lineup. Here's everything that Chevy is willing to tell us so far about the new Silverado.Chevrolet has reworked the offer sheet for the Silverado, bringing seven trim levels for customers to choose from: Silverado, Work Truck, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, Trail Boss, ZR2, and High Country. A ZR2 Bison with further enhancements from AEV will also be on offer. The carryover trims are largely similar to their predecessors, with "Silverado" arriving to replace the LT.The High Country trims forgoes its western inspiration for model year 2027, adopting a much cleaner and modern take on American luxury. (The layout will look familiar to those already familiar with GM's luxury-branded products, but that's not a bad thing.) We're particularly interested in the Custom Trail Boss, which offers an affordable entry point to GM's off-road portfolio; this model pairs a two-inch lift with 34-inch tires to make for a rather bare-bones but handsome wheeler. It doesn't have the unique bodywork found on the proper Trail Boss, however.AdvertisementAdvertisementNot that you have to have a Trail Boss for past-the-pavement capability. It's worth noting that every four-wheel drive Silverado will come as standard with the Z71 package hardware moving forward, which includes skid plates, hill descent control and off-road suspension tuning.ChevroletThe automaker will offer four different powertrains across those trim levels, with the 2.7-liter TurboMax turbocharged inline-four and the Duramax 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-six returning as carryovers. That said, customers will have two next-generation V-8 engines to choose from, which are related to the 6.7-liter unit that made its debut in the Corvette Grand Sport earlier this year. The "smaller" of the V-8s is a 5.7-liter unit, which serves to replace the now ancient 5.3-liter; the outgoing 6.2-liter is now replaced by a 6.6-liter unit, which Chevrolet claims is the most powerful naturally aspirated V-8 in its segment. The engines are slated to be built at GM's Flint, Tonawanda, and St. Catharines production facilities. The automaker isn't quite ready to share output figures for any of the new powertrains, but we expect the carryover units to remain in line with the outgoing truck's figures. We do know that the new V-8s both provide more torque than their predecessors for improved towing performance, however. Every Silverado model will now feature the brand's 10-speed automatic transmission, which should help improve efficiency and performance on the 2.7-liter.ChevroletThe exterior refresh of the new Silverado is far from a radical departure, but it's a design that enhances many of the older truck's best features. The new LED lighting front and rear is a nice progression of the corporate signature, and gives the truck a more athletic and almost expensive presence. I'm particularly fond of the larger wheel opening molding treatments, which highlight the truck's stance and the off-road capability of specific models. Customers who opt for a Custom or above will also receive a dual-exit exhaust as standard, which is always welcome. I could do without the black appliqué applied to the back of every Silverado tailgate; however, it wasn't a great look on Ford SUVs, and it's still not great here.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe most surprising upgrades come inside the new Silverado, where every truck will feature a 16.3-inch infotainment display paired alongside a 12.2-inch digital cluster. Higher trimmed models like the ZR2 and High Country will also feature an 11.5-inch passenger display, bringing a bit of Cadillac Escalade flair to the Silverado. A pair of dual wireless chargers help to ensure your devices never go dead, while the center console has also been reworked to include more storage and a flat-folding workspace. Higher trims add some rather nice amenities to the mix, such as the forged carbon accents in the ZR2 or the natural leather found in the High Country. Super Cruise is also on the menu in certain trims, and it remains the only hands-free automated driving assistance system that can handle towing on its own.ChevroletDespite wanting to show off the new Silverado, Chevy is still being a little cagey about the important details. We can expect powertrain information and the trim pricing breakdown to arrive before too long, however, as the trucks are slated to begin production before the year is out. By the time summer is over, we should have a much better picture of how this new truck stacks up against the offerings from Ford and Ram.You Might Also LikeIf You Can Only Own One Car, Make It One of TheseThese Are the Most Popular Cars by State
