June 30th is, apparently, National Corvette Day. While it's not a federally recognized holiday and you're probably not getting that PTO request approved, it is enough of an occasion to announce some updates to the 2027 Chevrolet Corvette. One of these changes means the 2027 model is officially the cheapest way to hit 200 miles per hour. The new top speed of the base model Corvette, which any schmuck can go buy at a Chevy dealer, the same place you can buy a $30,000 Bolt, is now 200 miles per hour. For $73,495. To be clear, that's nearly $10,000 cheaper than a BMW M4, which cannot do 200 miles per hour.ChevroletThere's a strange caveat: the figure is only attainable with the base car. Chevy's Z51 Performance package adds too much downforce to make 200 mph possible.AdvertisementAdvertisementGM says the new top speed is simply down to more power. The old 'Vette could hit 194, thanks to its 490-horsepower V8. To get the extra six miles per hour, Chevy has upgraded to a 6.7-liter LS6 V-8, raising output to 535 horsepower and 520 pound-feet of torque. "That's all power," Kociba said. "The record really shows the strength of the LS6, an engine that we set out to create a unique place in the Corvette lineup.""For the LS6, we've honored the historic principles of large-displacement small-block V8s, but not in a benign way, like 'I've been there, seen that," Kociba said. "So you get that low-speed torque for when you're canyon cruising and driving around town that makes the Corvette so drivable, yet we still have that high-end power to do insane things: 200 miles per hour is quite a milestone."Chevrolet actually tested it, too, proving the LS6 engine is capable of taking the base Corvette to 200. Funny enough, the next-cheapest way to get to 200 miles per hour, the $102,000 Cadillac CT-5 V Blackwing, is also a GM product. This story was originally published by Men's Journal on Jul 2, 2026, where it first appeared in the News section.
