The 2-Inch Trick That Changes Everything in a DIY Van BuildThe project is moving fast. We are deep in the garage phase, surrounded by tools, wood glue, and a mountain of sawdust. Building out this Ram Promaster is the most intense spatial puzzle I have ever tackled. I need this rig to be a seamless mobile production studio, but every single millimeter counts when you are trying to squeeze a kitchen, bed, and gear storage into a cargo van.Today was all about finishing the storage components. The result? Smooth. I spent the morning installing the slide-out kitchen drawers to make sure they glide perfectly before mounting the clean, white cabinet faces. If you want to check out the layout, take a look at the progress in "Camper van build is coming along #campervan #vanconversion #diyvan #roadtrip #promaster.mp4". Once this cabinet unit is secure, it is ready to be bolted directly into the main living space.Maximizing the Sleeping SpaceThe real victory today happened inside the van. We finally got the last wooden door panel installed on the rear door, but the biggest hurdle was the main walls. I needed to figure out a way to get a full-size bed to fit horizontally across the back. The metal structural ribbing of the van usually prevents this, forcing you to sleep vertically and sacrifice massive amounts of floor space.AdvertisementAdvertisementMy solution was to create sunken headboards. I cut out custom plywood sections and recessed them directly into the wall cavities between the metal studs. It was an absolute pain to align. The extra effort gave us an additional two inches of clearance on each side of the vehicle. Four inches of total space might not sound like a lot on paper, but when you are trying to stretch out after a brutal twelve-hour day of shooting, it makes all the difference in the world.Prepping for the Final StretchThe interior is finally starting to look like a home. The bench frame is loosely sitting in place, the ceiling is capped, and the insulated walls are sealed up behind clean timber. Tomorrow, I am diving straight into the remaining wall panels and finishing up the bench seating. It is a long journey from a hollow cargo shell, but the vision is locked in.
