You Can Never Be Too SureYou'd think that charging your Tesla would be a breeze, but with more and more people lining up at Supercharger locations, tensions apparently run high. Multiple reports describe people arguing over who got there first, and sometimes those arguments boil over into physical altercations or worse. There have been 2 highly publicized shootings that have occurred around Tesla Superchargers. One was back in 2023, when two men's argument turned into a fatal shooting incident.Worse still, a more recent fatal shooting episode just took place in Idaho, where two innocent bystanders charging their Teslas were shot during a mass shooting attack. One was killed while the other was severely injured; one reason they were hurt was that they were unable to leave the scene as the cars were still plugged in, and Tesla is now addressing that.Emergency Drive Away lets you shift into Drive while still plugged into a Supercharger pic.twitter.com/40GSzyP4lG— Tesla Charging (@TeslaCharging) October 1, 2026Emergency Drive AwayIn all fairness to Tesla, they immediately recognized the danger posed by these unforeseen emergency events and swiftly began working on a solution. Tesla just announced the Emergency Drive Away feature on its official X account. As mentioned, one of the victims of the recent shooting claims that he was trying to shift the car into drive to be able to flee the scene, but to no avail. This new feature addresses that by allowing the car to not only shift into Drive but also to break free of the charging station. If you need to leave quickly without unplugging, you can shift the car into Drive, and a warning message will pop up on the screen. The notification acts as one last "Are you sure?" question before you engage the Emergency Drive Away feature. In the official demonstration video, we can clearly see a piece break off the connector when the car drove away, and Tesla points out that using Emergency Drive Away will damage your car and the Supercharger. Tesla also noted that misuse of this feature might result in additional penalties.TeslaAvailabilityCurrently, Tesla is rolling out the Emergency Drive Away feature via its Over-the-Air (OTA) system. The feature requires your car to be running at least software version 2026.38.3. The feature also won't work on pre-2021 Tesla Model S and Model X, and it will only work in the U.S. for now.Tesla
