No Wrench RequiredOne of the advantages of over-the-air updates is that car owners don't need to take the time to visit dealerships to receive new features. Tesla is one of the pioneers of OTA updates, and its latest release under Version 2026.38 adds a new headlight upgrade called Dynamic Headlight Leveling.According to Teslarati, Dynamic Headlight Leveling, coming to select Model 3 and Cybertruck vehicles, automatically adjusts the low-beam aim to maximize visibility while minimizing glare for other road users. It has a similar purpose to the Matrix High-Beam System, but the two operate differently. The new feature moves the entire low-beam aim up or down, while the Matrix High-Beam System selectively dims individual LED segments around other cars.TeslaAim SmarterBecause hard acceleration or extra weight over the rear can cause headlights to aim higher than intended, dynamic leveling systems can compensate for changes in vehicle pitch in real time. This keeps the beam directed toward the road instead of other drivers' eyes. The low beams could already be electronically adjusted up or down for calibration, but the new update expands that capability by adjusting the aim based on driving conditions and nearby traffic.Interestingly, Tesla issued a recall earlier this year because certain MY2017–2023 Model 3 and MY2020–2023 Model Y examples have headlamp low-beam outputs that exceed the allowed maximum intensity. NHTSA recall 26V507 cautioned that the lights may reduce visibility for the driver and other road users, increasing the risk of a crash. There is no indication that Dynamic Headlight Leveling has been rolled out to address the safety campaign, so the new feature should not be considered a remedy, but its focus on reducing glare makes the timing noteworthy. The report stated that the new headlight feature is initially reaching a limited set of vehicles, including Model 3 and Cybertruck examples in the U.S. and UAE.TeslaMore Than HeadlightsNot A Tesla App also disclosed other OTA updates in Version 2026.38, including visual updates on the center display, security improvements, and Supercharger Site Maps, which provide the live status of individual charging stalls, showing whether they are available, occupied, or down. With software-defined vehicles (SDVs) becoming more prevalent, OTA updates are likely to become increasingly common. Rivian explicitly describes its vehicles as software-defined, while BMW describes its Neue Klasse architecture as the basis for a new generation of SDVs. For car buyers, that simply means products can continue to develop even after purchase.Tesla
