Finding a regular cab truck is getting tougher and tougher, but Chevrolet is doing its part to ensure work-oriented pickups remain part of its lineup. These images from the CarBuzz spy photographers show that there could be one arriving for the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado from the very beginning. Sporty Shorty Will Return To Chevy Dealers CarBuzz/Valnet It used to be that the regular cab truck was the default option. If you had a truck, it had two doors and a bench seat. But with sales of crew cabs growing thanks to their frequent use as family transport, regular-cab pickups have started to disappear. When the current-generation Ram 1500 appeared in 2019, it didn't have a regular cab option, and in the Ford F-150, it's found on the base trim only.So it's a pleasant surprise to see a short cab – and, by the looks of it, short bed – pickup going through testing at GM's test track and on public roads in Michigan. The truck looks like a base model, or WT in Chevy-speak. The ultra-low air dam, basic front grille, and steel wheels all scream work truck, putting a low price over everything else.CarBuzz/Valnet It's not completely basic, though. The bumpers show parking sensors at the front and the back. The truck also has GM's handy bumper corner step built into the rear. LED turn signals in the mirrors are another sign that this might be basic, but it won't be stripped. That shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone familiar with today's WT, which still comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, power mirrors, forward collision monitoring, and cruise control. The days of the stripped-down pickup are long gone.Of course, there is the possibility that the vehicle seen in these photos isn't meant for the US. Although we got a long-bed variant from the current gen's 2019 debut, American dealers didn't get the current-gen short-bed, regular cab configuration until 2022, despite being offered in the Middle East and Mexico. Those markets could be the target for the truck this time around, as well. New Trucks Will Get New Engines, Arrive This Year We've now seen a growing number of configurations of the latest Chevrolet (and GMC) truck, including crew and regular cabs in various trim levels, including what we believe to be the luxurious High Country trim and the ZR2/AT4X off-road trucks. The new GM pickups will be getting new engine options, including a new generation of the iconic small-block V8. The new engines are rumored to be 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter units, replacing the older 5.3 and 6.2 with more power, lower emissions, and, since that 5.7 is 350 cubic inches, a much more storied displacementCarBuzz/ValnetGM has already said that the new trucks would debut sometime this year. A New York show reveal in April is possible, or GM could debut the trucks on their own. Expect one reveal for the Silverado and one for the mechanically identical GMC Sierra. It's also possible that the latter will have some additional extras to distinguish it from the Chevy.Previous spots of the trucks, along with design drawings contained in patent filings, have already let us see most of th exterior design. Now we're waiting for the inside (and, for truck buyers, the crucial bragging rights numbers for towing, hauling, and torque).
