The automaker scrapped plans to bring the 2023 LF-ZC electric sedan concept to production, according to a report by Automotive News. The LF-ZC was revealed at the 2023 Tokyo auto show as a future electric flagship for Lexus. At the time, Lexus confirmed plans to put the concept into production in 2026, with the model meant to introduce new technologies, including significantly improved battery tech.Lexus (Lexus)Now, weakened demand in the EV marketplace is forcing Toyota's hand, with a spokesperson for the automaker telling AN that it canceled the EV after "taking into account fluctuations in market demand and the workload associated with vehicle planning and manufacturing."AdvertisementAdvertisementThe decision to scrap the LF-ZC comes only weeks after Lexus revealed the electric TZ. Unlike the LF-ZC, which was planned to ride on a new electric architecture, the three-row SUV rides on Toyota's modular TNGA-K platform, reducing the costs associated with launching the TZ and providing an easier path towards profitability.Still, Lexus won't totally abandon its EV development. "We decided to cancel the LF-ZC development project as part of a company-wide review of vehicle development projects," a spokesperson for the brand said to AN. "The cancellation of this specific development project does not mean we have given up on developing next-generation BEVs."A spokesperson for the brand declined to confirm the report outright to Car and Driver and supplied the following statement: "We routinely and continuously review and evaluate our product plans to achieve the optimal strategy, including the consolidation and reorganization of projects. Toyota will continue to respond swiftly and attentively to changing times and needs, striving to build cars and provide experiences that exceed our customers’ expectations."➡️ Skip the lot.
