The 2027 Lexus IS Special Appearance Package Proves Scarcity Alone Doesn't Make a Collector CarModern Car CollectorJohn LloydSat, September 12, 2026 at 12:00 AM UTCAdd us on GoogleThe 2027 Lexus IS Special Appearance Package Proves Scarcity Alone Doesn't Make a Collector CarLexus closed out its IS 25th Legacy Tour in Miami on August 29 by unveiling the 2027 IS Special Appearance Package — a green-over-black trim exercise built on the familiar IS 350 F Sport. Three hundred fifty examples are earmarked for the North American market. The paint is new. The wheels are new. Nearly everything else under the sheet metal is not, and that distinction says more about the modern collector market than the color name ever will.Call the shade Envious, because Lexus does. It's a deep, satin-finished green that spills into the cabin as contrast stitching on black NuLuxe seats trimmed with Ultrasuede inserts, set off by satin chrome accents throughout. The car rides on 19-inch black BBS forged wheels and comes standard with a sport-tuned adaptive variable suspension, five drive modes, a Torsen limited-slip rear differential on rear-drive cars, triple-beam LED headlamps, a panoramic view monitor, and Mark Levinson audio. Power comes from the same naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V-6 found in every other 2027 IS, 311 horsepower and 280 lb-ft, sent through an eight-speed automatic in rear-drive form or a six-speed in the all-wheel-drive variant. Lexus has not released pricing, and the cars won't reach dealers until later this year.None of that is a knock on the car. It is, by every account, a handsome and well-equipped sport sedan wearing a color most manufacturers would never approve for production. But it is worth being precise about what Lexus actually built here, because the language surrounding limited-production specials — "only 350 for North America" — is often mistaken by buyers for the kind of scarcity that drives long-term collector value. It rarely does.An Annual Ritual, Not a MilestoneLexus has issued a new Special Edition or Special Appearance Package for the IS every year since 2022. The 2027 car is simply this year's installment, timed to close out a four-city tour marking the IS nameplate's 25th anniversary — a nameplate that, since its 1999 debut as Lexus's answer to the BMW 3 Series, has sold roughly 1.3 million units across more than 40 countries, according to the automaker's own figures. That is a genuinely important sales and cultural story for Lexus. It is not, on its own, a collector-car story, because an annual cadence is the opposite of scarcity in the sense collectors care about. A special edition that recurs every model year isn't marking an ending. It's marking a calendar. The Real Comparison: The IS 500 Ultimate EditionThe more instructive comparison sits two model years back. In May 2025, Lexus introduced the IS 500 Ultimate Edition, also capped at 500 units for North America, but built around the 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V-8 rather than the V-6 — an engine Lexus itself described as "one of the last remaining naturally aspirated luxury V8s on the market." That is a different kind of limited edition entirely. Its scarcity is structural: it exists because the naturally aspirated V-8 sport sedan, as a category, is disappearing across the industry, squeezed out by turbocharging, hybridization, and emissions targets that no big-displacement engine survives unassisted. The Ultimate Edition isn't valuable because Lexus built only 500. It may be significant because it will likely be remembered as one of the last of its kind, regardless of trim.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe 2027 Special Appearance Package doesn't carry that weight. It doesn't close out an engine, a platform, or a chapter of engineering. It closes out a marketing tour.Manufactured Scarcity vs. Structural ScarcityThis is a distinction worth teaching, because modern manufacturers have gotten very good at borrowing the vocabulary of genuine rarity — numbered builds, exclusive colors, anniversary badges — and attaching it to cars that are otherwise mechanically identical to the volume model sitting next to them on the lot. We've made this argument before in the context of tribute cars: the 2002 GMMG Dick Harrell Edition Camaro, limited to just 30 examples, earns its place in serious collections not because of the number 30, but because of chassis-specific documentation, dealer authentication, and mechanical variation between individual cars that a VIN decoder alone can't reveal. Production numbers are a starting point for a collector-car case, never the whole case. The same principle explains why interest continues to build around a 1997 Toyota Supra Turbo 15th Anniversary Edition like the 19,000-mile example that surfaced earlier this year. Its anniversary badge and Renaissance Red paint are pleasant footnotes. What actually drives the money is the twin-turbo 2JZ-GTE inline-six and six-speed manual sitting beneath the special-edition dress — a genuinely significant engine that would matter with or without the badge. Strip the anniversary trim off a 2027 IS Special Appearance Package, by contrast, and you're left with an IS 350 F Sport that any dealer can order in a dozen other colors.Lexus has produced cars that pass the structural-scarcity test decisively — the LFA being the obvious case. A 72-mile Nürburgring Package example we covered earlier this year illustrates what happens when a Japanese manufacturer builds something with an actual, uncompromised engineering story: a carbon-fiber chassis, a 9,000-rpm V-10, and a production run capped by hand-build capacity rather than a marketing calendar. That car draws serious money because nothing else like it exists. The IS Special Appearance Package exists precisely because plenty of other IS models like it already do.What This Means for CollectorsFor buyers drawn to Envious green and the NuLuxe cabin, that's a fine reason to order one — as a car to drive, not as an allocation to flip. Expect it to depreciate like the well-equipped IS 350 F Sport it mechanically remains. The 350-unit figure is a production-planning decision, not an engineering constraint, and the market has historically shown little patience for the difference once the marketing language fades and the car is simply a used sedan again.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe more interesting long-term watch within Lexus's own IS lineage remains the 2025 IS 500 Ultimate Edition: documented, low-mile, unmodified examples of the last naturally aspirated V-8 in this segment are worth tracking over the next decade, the way collectors now track the final naturally aspirated Corvettes and Mustangs of their respective eras. The Special Appearance Package is a pleasant, well-timed sendoff to a 25th-anniversary tour. It is not that kind of car — and knowing the difference is exactly the judgment serious collectors are paid to have. The IS 500 Ultimate Edition earned its place in collector conversations because Lexus ran out of engineering runway. The Special Appearance Package exists because Lexus ran out of tour stops. Collectors who can't tell those two moments apart will keep paying premiums for spreadsheets that happen to be painted green.Join our Newsletter, follow our Instagram page, and follow us on Facebook.
