US version of the Toyota bZImage: ToyotaThe Toyota bZ (known as the bZ4X in Europe), the Subaru Solterra, and the Lexus RZ are all based on the e-TNGA platform, which stands for the electric version of the ‘Toyota New Global Architecture’. All three models are battery-electric SUVs that share strong visual and technical similarities. As a result, they also use the same electronic control unit (ECU), which is faulty in vehicles from the 2026 model year. For now, the recall affects only the USA and is already listed in the recall database of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. According to the database, 20,991 vehicles are affected. Specifically, the recall includes 11,495 Toyota bZ models, 4,757 Subaru Solterra units, and 4,739 Lexus RZ units.According to the NHTSA entry, authorised dealers will update the software of the battery control unit free of charge. However, an over-the-air update is not possible. Notification letters to vehicle owners in the USA are expected to be sent on 3 August 2026.No corresponding recall has yet been listed in the database of the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). However, it is likely that vehicles in Germany are also affected, as the battery-electric vehicles from Toyota, Lexus, and Subaru recalled in the USA were manufactured at Toyota’s Motomachi plant in Japan—the same facility that produces the Toyota bZ4X, Subaru Solterra, and Lexus RZ for the European market. In Japan, Toyota announced a recall just a few days earlier, as reported by Electrek. There, 4,808 vehicles are affected. Additionally, Australia has already issued a recall for 1,101 units of the Toyota bZ4X and four units of the Lexus RZ.Just last year, there was another recall for these three models. At that time, 94,320 units of the Toyota bZ4X, Subaru Solterra, and Lexus RZ in the USA were affected due to an issue with the heating system control.nhtsa.gov, electrek.co, drive.com.au (Australia)
