Of all the things on my 2026 automotive bingo card, seeing a lap record rivalry explode between Porsche and Chevrolet was not one I expected to become a reality. But in the last few months alone, Porsche and Manthey Racing have made it their mission to rain on the Corvette ZR1's parade at every opportunity possible, most notably by taking a 518-horsepower 911 GT3 RS with the Manthey Kit and beating the Nürburgring lap time set by two Corvettes with double the horsepower. But that was at the Nürburgring. Now, however, Porsche's taken things a step further, coming to the Corvette's home turf and beating its records on an American circuit... with a seven-year-old car.A trio of Porsche 911 models with Manthey Equipment has taken to Road Atlanta, setting three incredible lap times that prove it won't go down against the Corvette without a fight.Porsche 911 Manthey Road Atlanta group shot (1) Smashing The Corvette ZR1's Outright Record Early in 2025, Chevrolet took the Corvette ZR1 on a trip around America, setting five new lap records at iconic American circuits. The likes of Laguna Seca and COTA were notably absent, but Road Atlanta was on the agenda, and the ZR1 set an outright record of a 1:22.8 with development engineer Chris Barber at the wheel. Not bad for a 1,064-hp mid-engined Corvette with a (relatively) affordable price tag, not driven by a professional racer. The lap beat the Porsche 911 GT2 RS by two seconds. But Porsche couldn't let this stand, and with a 2019 911 GT2 RS - a seven-year-old car - equipped with the Manthey Kit and road-legal, Porsche approved Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R N0 tires, the German automaker has reclaimed the record, setting a 1:22.649 lap with former racing driver Jörg Bergmeister at the wheel. That's 0.2 seconds quicker than the ZR1 and 2.2 seconds quicker than its previous best effort, all with only 690 hp to play with from its twin-turbo flat six.2019 Porsche 911 GT2 RS Manthey Kit - Road Atlanta (1) 911 GT3 Twins Got In On The Lap Time Action With such a significant power deficit to the ZR1, the GT2 RS's lap time is hugely impressive. And lest we forget, that's still the last-generation model; we haven't been given a 992-gen GT2 RS yet, with the model only expected to launch next year. So how do current 911 (type 992) models fare around Road Atlanta?2025 Porsche 911 GT3 RS Manthey Kit at Road Atlanta (8)Porsche brought a pre-facelift (992.1) GT3 RS and a post-facelift (992.2) GT3, both equipped with the Manthey Kit to Road Atlanta. The former was the same spec that dethroned the Corvette ZR1 and ZR1X at the Nurburgring earlier this year, and put its 2,200 lbs of downforce to good use, lapping the American circuit in 1:23.92. In doing so, it became the fastest naturally aspirated sports car to ever lap the circuit. The Manthey-equipped 911 GT3, meanwhile, achieved a 1:24.639 lap (video below), 1.8 seconds faster than the 2022 model year 911 GT3 that had previously lapped the circuit. The Lap Record War Is Only Getting Started It's scary to think that Porsche achieved these laps with two of three cars that are no longer in production. We're still waiting on a 992.2 GT3 RS, and the GT2 RS will take this to the next level with more than 700 horsepower from a hybrid powertrain. And that's before Manthey upgrades the suspension, brakes, and aero. That said, Chevrolet has yet to employ the services of a real racing driver for its lap times, both in America and at the Nürburgring, so it still has the opportunity to clap back and reclaim the throne. Something tells us this war is only just getting started.2025 Porsche 911 GT3 RS Manthey Kit at Road Atlanta (6)
