Image Credit: Oklahoma County Sheriff's OfficePolice see a lot of weird things on the road. Every now and then, however, they still see things that stump them. That's what happened in Oklahoma City when officers spotted a little red vehicle that they couldn't quite put a name to. It looked like something between a scooter and a tiny car, and it was cruising around without a license place. So their move was to pull it over and figure out what they were dealing with. The stop was made by the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office's Lt. Gib Crawford. The department later admitted online that, at first glance, they were completely confused by what they were looking at. But after closer inspection. it turned out to be a tilt scooter" a three-wheeled, partly enclosed ride with a 50cc engine. It tops out around 40 mph, and that's precisely why you're hearing about it right now.The hangup was that missing tag. As the department explained it, Oklahoma treats a 50cc two-wheeler that tops out at 35 mph or less as a moped, which doesn't need a plate. This scooter, though, has three wheels and goes 40. That pushes it past the moped line and into the category that needs a license, registration, a title, insurance, and yes, a tag.AdvertisementAdvertisementUnder the law, the driver should have had that scooter tagged and registered. Crawford decided to cut the drivers a break anyway and just gave them a warning. As the department put it, "We thought it was pretty cool." It's not often a traffic stop ends with the cops as charmed as the rest of us.So What Is a Tilt Scooter? If the name doesn't ring a bell, you're not alone. But then again, neither were the officers. A tilt scooter is basically a scooter that leans into turns like a motorcycle. This one came in a small enclosed body with a roof and a windshield. The result looks a bit like a scooter with aspirations to grow into a car. And they're actually pretty common overseas. That in-between design is exactly what makes them so confusing, legally speaking. It isn't quite a motorcycle, isn't quite a moped, and definitely isn't a normal car. With a tiny engine but a car-like shell and a third wheel, it falls into a gray area that traffic laws weren't really written for. No wonder the officers had to look it up.Why Oklahoma Said It Needed a TagIn a lot of places, including Oklahoma, the line between a moped and a regular motor vehicle comes down to two things: engine size and top speed. A small enough engine paired with a low enough top speed doesn't need a plate or registration. But when you bump up the speed, things change. This scooter had the small 50cc engine, which blew past the 35 mph cutoff.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdd in the third wheel, and it tipped fully into needing a license, registration, title, insurance, and a tag, the same as a car or motorcycle. For anyone who owns one of these, that's the catch worth knowing, since a fun little 50cc ride can still come with grown-up paperwork once it gets quick enough. In this case, the officer used some discretion and let the driver go with a warning.Sometimes a vehicle is strange enough that even the people enforcing the rules want to give it a pass.
