In a world packed with restomods andlate-model engine swaps, it's refreshing to see an old-school build. Take it from me, modern tech is an awesome thing to have in classic cars. That doesn't mean it's the only option. Builders have been making muscle cars run hard for half a century now. There are guys out there with tricks up their sleeves that can make a vintage ride run circles around today's cars with ease. One of them is the man named John, who just showcased his 1968 Ford Mustang on Autotopia LA.Small Block, Big PowerAutotopia LA, YouTubeAutotopia LA just featured a1968 Ford Mustang that's a testament to the fact that old-school tech works far better than a lot of people want to think. No, it's not as refined or well-rounded as modern stuff, but it'll get the job done and last the test of time. The owner, John, built this car back in the early 2000s and has been driving it since. Considering the power it makes and how heavy his foot is, that's a pretty insane accomplishment.This1968 Mustang started life with a 302 under the hood. John quickly replaced that with a 351, then again with the current stroker motor using a Ford Racing block. At one point in its life, the engine made roughly 1,000 horsepower, rocketing the car to a 9-second quarter-mile. It's since been dialed back. To be more specific, the motor is a 393 cubic-inch Windsor that's currently producing somewhere around 630 horsepower.Behind the engine is a three-speed automatic with a reverse manual valvebody. The engine is breathing through a 4-inch exhaust with steep 4.11:1 gears out back. All of that comes together to make for a seriously nutty driving experience.Built Right With The Right PartsAutotopia LA, YouTubeThe outward appearance of the car matches the driveline. It's a bold representation of a bygone era. It's got skinny tires up front, a monstrous hood scoop, and Weld wheels. Other than the fact that it's a fastback Mustang, there's nothing fancy about it. The body lines, equipment, and single-stage paint job are all about getting down to business, which this car does very, very well. The second the car hits the road in this clip, you know exactly what it's all about. John and the host Shawn Davis waste no time letting that four-barrel feed thatgnarly Ford motor the fuel it craves. The thing sounds incredible and lays seriously wicked burnouts. And since it's a drag car at heart, it gets up to speed like a bona fide missile.Old School WorksAutotopia LA, YouTubeThere's a lot to like about this Mustang. It's an absolutely killer build all around, and John has a lot to be proud of here. However, the thing he should really be most pumped about is the fact that this thing is still running hard after 30 years of cruel punishment. While it does go to show thatclassic cars had some robust equipment to work with back in the day, it's also proof that this guy really knows how to put one together. Here's to another 30 years of madness.
