'No One Needs to Know:' Service Tech Asks If He Can Put On Headphones. Then He Reveals What He’s Listening To

Once you’ve landed the job, it’s really no one’s business (other than your manager) how it gets done. One service tech puts this adage to the test by revealing what he’s listening to as he prepares to tint a car window.

Caldwell, Idaho’s Exclusive Quality Tint, posted the skit on Facebook about six weeks ago. A service tech is preparing to tint the windows of a vehicle. “Do you mind if I put on headphones?” he asks someone off camera.

When he pops the AirPod into his ear, the viewer can hear: “Welcome to Tinting for Beginners. You’re gonna need a spray bottle…”

We all know someone who overpromises in job interviews, but this is next level. Luckily, it’s just a joke. “We are actually quite the opposite here at Exclusive Quality Tint,” the caption reads. “From Teslas to food trucks—we are the Treasure Valley’s favorite tint shop.”

Viewers React to the Skit

In the comments section, viewers said they understand breaking into the business by any means necessary.

“This would be me,” wrote one person. “I want to learn tinting, but everyone around wants experience.”

“I told a warehouse I had forklift experience when I was 19,” wrote a second. “Luckily, they showed us a 1-hour video and gave us quick, hands-on instructions before sending us out to wreck stuff. It was pretty easy, though.”

Tint School vs. YouTube University

Santa Clara-based tint shop Jet Black Tint posted this blog to help aspiring tint techs determine whether the professional tint training avenue or the self-taught route is their best option.

In terms of the pros, car tint school gives students:

  • Access to professional equipment and materials
  • Experience with tint installations and a variety of car models to work on
  • Client management training

It also comes with some cons, because school is:

  • Costly (thousands of dollars)
  • A time commitment

What about the self-taught method? Its pros include:

  • It can be cheaper
  • It’s more flexible
  • Can be an option for tinters with prior experience

As with everything, self-taught also comes with cons:

  • Self-taught students buy their own materials
  • Some employers might require formal training

A person wanting to learn how to window tint wrote asking for help on the Tint Dude forum earlier this summer. One person said, “The only option for someone with no experience is to start at the bottom as a helper, making helper pay, and move your way up. Start at a shop as a prep and clean up guy and maybe from there you can get hands-on the install process.”

Someone else offered a slightly different perspective. “Research this site, research YouTube videos, purchase an array of tools needed, buy some film, and begin with your own car,” they wrote. “Once you get through the learning curve, open yourself up to friends and family. Beyond that, you will know whether or not you have the knack for the trade.”
