The release marks a significant step forward for battery swapping on the international standardization stage. It also signals that Chinese automakers, led by NIO, are leveraging years of technical innovation and operational experience to shape the global smart EV industry.Compared to its predecessor, the updated SS 722 introduces a critical new section: "Electric vehicles charging system – Part 4: Battery swapping and mobile charging system." The company plans to build over 1,000 new stations in 2026, pushing its total count beyond 4,600 by year-end. Deployment of its fifth-generation stations is set to ramp up in the third quarter.William Li, NIO's founder, chairman, and CEO, has previously stated that the company will not chase profitability at individual stations in the short term. Instead, it plans to continue aggressive investment to accelerate its network expansion.To date, NIO has led or participated in the formulation and revision of more than 50 national, industry, and group standards, alongside four IEC standards in the battery swapping sector. The company continues to drive the development of the industry's standardization framework, aiming to foster regulatory compliance and technical innovation through established norms.As of June 10, NIO had filed for over 1,650 global patents related to battery swapping. Nationwide, the company has constructed 8,960 power and charging facilities — comprising 3,904 battery swap stations, 5,056 charging stations, and 29,089 EV charging piles. Cumulative battery swap services have now surpassed 110 million times.NIO stated it will continue to drive technical innovation and push for the standardization of new achievements. By actively participating in the development of standard systems and working with industry partners to build consensus, the company aims to promote the high-quality development of the smart EV sector and facilitate the deeper integration of the automotive and energy industries.
