Luxury brand Genesis is getting ready to bring something to market it has never offered before: Hybrid power. The G80 sedan probably won't be the first new Genesis hybrid to go on sale, but it will be very early on in the process. The Korean automaker has taken its development test cars a very long way, just for the CarBuzz spies to manage to snap them driving on a frozen Swedish lake. Second Spot For Newest Version Of The G80 CarBuzz/Valnet This isn't the first time that our spy photographers have snapped a prototype G80 recently. Last month, we saw a facelifted version of the sedan on the road in California, where it had light camouflage hiding a new grille mesh design, lower bumper changes, and some other small differences. The one we bring you today is much more heavily camouflaged. The pillars have been wrapped in camouflage along with the front fenders. Even the hood and front and rear bumpers have a wrap underneath the black fabric covers. That's a lot of hiding for just a facelift.CarBuzz/Valnet We think we can see new taillights peeking out. The brand's signature twin strips separated by bodywork appear to be just one lamp on this car. The headlights also look new, though it's tough to be sure. It definitely has the same new grille mesh we spotted in California, and those wheels are a lovely new design. The CarBuzz spy team tells us that this is a hybrid-powered vehicle. It will use the Hyundai Motor Group's new TMED-II (Transmission Mounted Electric Device-II) system, which adds a second motor to Hyundai's existing hybrid set. This leaves one motor to drive and one to charge, while the previous Hyundai hybrids could only do one or the other at the same time. That system debuted in the Hyundai Palisade crossover, but the G80 is not set to switch to a transverse layout like the Palisade. In the Palisade, the hybrid system and 2.5-liter turbo-four make 329 horsepower. Current gas Genesis G80 offerings make 300 hp from a 2.5-liter turbo-four or 375 from a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6. Genesis would have to rotate the Hyundai engine 90 degrees to fit, but it has already done that with the engines in the current G70 and G80. Plenty Of Electrification Coming From Genesis CarBuzz/Valnet We're told that it could add features including power-operated doors, and that the model would be more luxurious. But it's not expected to get many changes to the cabin, so it may be about the materials rather than the design. The G80 got a facelift just last year, so it's not due quite yet.The first hybrid from Genesis is still expected to be the large GV80 SUV. Reports say it will start production in September of this year. A GV70 hybrid is expected in early 2027, and this model should get a reveal before the end of 2026 and go on sale not long after. It's a sharp change for Genesis. In early 2025, CarBuzz was told by Head of Product and Safety Officer, Marc Choi that the brand's plans were for extended-range EVs, not hybrids. The reason given was that Genesis didn't have the budget to develop hybrid systems. The new schedule suggests that someone at Genesis figured out a way to make it happen economically. Or, the brand determined that EREV models weren't enough of an improvement to get the sales it needs.Genesis G80 Hybrid 12
