Mercedes-Benz's newest electric vehicle, the GLC 400 EQ, is delivering strong sales. But it's still not what every Benz buyer is looking for. The luxury brand has loads of customers looking for something faster, and they're about to get their wish. The CarBuzz spy photographers just snapped the Mercedes-AMG version of the GLC out testing, and the new performance electric SUV is going to have the strangest rear spoiler we've seen in a very long time. All Spoilers For This AMG CarBuzz/Valnet An active rear spoiler mounted to the top of the tailgate? That's exactly what this new EV is showing, and it's as strange to look at as it is to say out loud. Normally, it would be in the retracted position when the vehicle is parked, like it is in these photos. But in this case it's up, likely because it's a prototype, and that lets us see all the gritty details. And the gritty tape on the rear edge, another prototype detail.Spoilers are about altering how the air flows over the back of a vehicle, for reduced drag or lift. With reports from our spies saying that this model will have 950 horsepower or more, there will be plenty of air flowing whenever the driver decides to mash the accelerator. Those motors will be axial flux units from Mercedes-Benz subsidiary Yasa. One at the front and two at the rear appears to be where AMG is headed with its go-fast models, even if it is one less motor than BMW's M cars are expected. The Benz motors have incredible power density, making them as light as they are beefy. This Electric Gets Massive Brakes CarBuzz/Valnet The wing isn't the only clear sign of AMG-ness on this new crossover. Just look at the wheels, which are AMG split-spoke designs. While you're looking, have a gander inside the wheels, where a massive set of brake rotors and equally chunky calipers guarantee this performance SUV will be able to stop fast and hard over and over again. We've seen smaller brakes on other AMG EVs, so this is an interesting development.Subtly different side skirts and wheel arches, along with larger and more prominent air inlets in the nose, all help make sure that the cooling needs of the AMG are met. It might not have an engine, but more horsepower and higher levels of regeneration lead directly to more heat from the inverters and battery hardware, no matter how efficient they are.CarBuzz/Valnet We can't see much of the interior in these shots, but that's not a problem. The overall design will match the standard GLC EQ, it's in the finishes that AMG makes every Mercedes its own. We can see the typical AMG seats inside, with fixed headrests and fake harness slots, for one. Expect it to come with an AMG-specific steering wheel along with more carbon fiber trim and some sort of synthetic suede or similar for the main touchpoints. We still have no word on when the newest member of the AMG family will be revealed, but it's likely to be relatively soon. It's been more than a year since the first time we saw the electric GLC AMG, and deliveries of the standard model have started. So expect to see it well before the end of this year.MB AMG GLC EQ 7
