The danger in naming your car after a thing is that there's nothing stopping another car company from building that same thing. The Bugatti Tourbillon is an extraordinary hypercar that looks like nothing else, and with its modern V16 engine, sounds like nothing else. But it's named after components used in high-end watches. Now, Bugatti isn't the only high-end automaker with tourbillon on the brain. Maserati has just launched one of its own, and will be even more exclusive. But don't expect a court battle over who gets to use the name. Maserati's version isn't a car, it's an actual tourbillon. A Watch To Rule All Watches Maserati UltraFino (1)Maserati has partnered with Swiss horologist Bianchet to make a new piece of wrist candy. It's called the UltraFino Maserati, and it's a Flying Tourbillon watch, which will be limited to just 100 pieces. And each will be one-of-a-kind.The inspiration for the watch is the Maserati MCPura, the company's latest supercar. The carbon fiber MCPura has a 621-horsepower twin-turbo 3.0-liter Nettuno V6. The watch has a Bianchet UT01 calibre, which has a rotor shaped from 12 interlacing Fibonacci spirals.Maserati We've found a photo of the 29 jewel movement taken apart, and the complexity and intricacy are stunning. Fortunately, a crystal rear case will let the owner see that movement in, uh, movement. At least when they're not wearing it.The dial design is taken from the MCPura's wheels, or at least that's what the release says. We don't quite see the trident-logo motif that Maserati says it is going for. The Ai Aqua Rainbow green finish of the watch debuted on the MCPura shown at Goodwood last year, and that Fuoriserie Collezione Futura Program color is a more obvious link.Bianchet has made this complex watch ready to take on some serious punishment. The movement can handle 5,000 G impacts, the company said. It calls that "a direct parallel with MCPura’s suspension engineering and electronic traction management," which is a bigger reach than the one from Timex to Bianchet. The movement has a 60-hour power reserve, and is made up of 225 components. The whole thing is only 3.5 millimeters thick, which is about the same as two US nickels stacked together. What's A Tourbillon? Maserati In a watch, a tourbillon is one where the escapement and balance wheels are mounted in a rotating cage. It makes the timepiece more accurate and reduces the impact of gravity. A Flying Tourbillon uses only one attachment point instead of two, so the movement looks like it is floating in space. The asking price for this watch is 75,500 Swiss Francs, which is approximately $96,000. If you want one of Bianchet's non-Maserati UltraFinos, you can save about $10,000. The price is a bargain against the estimated $4 million Bugatti wants for a Tourbillon car, or the $450,000 for the latest Chiron Tourbillon timepiece from Jacob & Co.Announced at the same time (though not the same place), Maserati also showed off some special edition cars. The first was a new GranCabrio with a fully-custom soft top. The top is Maserati blue with a gold trident, and it's something the company has never done before. The second Fuoriserie car, Maserati's name for its one-off and custom brand, was an MCPura Cielo in the same Ai Aqua Rainbow as the watch. On the convertible, it's easier to see the iridescent color as it changes in the light.MaseratiIronically, the cars were revealed at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, where they're on display through April 12. UltraFino Maserati, the Flying Tourbillon watch, was unveiled at the Watches and Wonders 2026 trade fair in Geneva.
