Unsurprisingly, competition is fierce, and the Kia Sportage has its work cut out to compete with class leaders like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and Chevy Equinox.Following a redesign in 2023, and a mid-life refresh this year, the Sportage is well-placed to increase its market share, but to do that it needs to offer a low-stress ownership experience, and a big part of that is having solid reliability.AdvertisementAdvertisementWe decided to take a look at the current generation Kia Sportage's reliability record, not from what the manufacturer or reviewer might claim, but from actual owner experience. To do this we used reliability scores collated by Consumer Reports (CR). It buys ever car it tests, is independent from manufacturer influence, and relies on owner feedback for its reliability scores.Kia Sportage Historical Reliability DataKiaView the 3 images of this gallery on the original articleModel YearSportageSportage HybridSportage Plug-in Hybrid202350463520245982632025763674202662 (Predicted)51 (Predicted)57 (Predicted)Average61,7553,7557,25Scores are out of 100While the previous generation Sportage was a capable and comfortable SUV, the newest version has added visual flair and a big bump up in interior tech. The boomerang headlight design and funky interior layout may have been a step too far, though, and the 2026 update introduced a more toned-down front-end treatment and less divisive dashboard design, too.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe Sportage's traditional selling points are still there though, and it offers a great ride over rough surfaces, comes packed with kit even in base trim, and is priced very keenly. It offers plenty of interior space, with class-leading rear passenger leg room, and the 10-year/100,000 miles powertrain warranty is still the best in the business. It isn't the most engaging compact SUV out there, but that is not a priority for most customers, and while the base 187-hp gas engine feels lackluster, there is a 232-hp hybrid and 268-hp Plug-in Hybrid on offer as well.In terms of reliability, the Sportage has largely followed the expected trend of consistent improvement over the years, with the earliest 2023 models experiencing some minor powertrain and climate control niggles, that kept their overall scores down. The 2025 Hybrid and 2023 Plug-in Hybrid models have had the most owner complaints, while the regular gas-powered Sportage has shown the most consistent improvement in reliability and the highest overall average. As of 2026, there have been three recalls according thot eh National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which is below average.Sportage Vs. The standard gas models have proven to be the most reliable, and they are not far behind the class-leaders when comparing the 2026 predicted reliability scores. Hybrid models (for most manufacturers) tend to be slightly more problematic than their gas-only counterparts, unless of course, you are looking at the Toyota RAV4, which tops the tables regardless of engine option.AdvertisementAdvertisementThat said, Sportage Plug-in Hybrid has proven to be almost as reliable as the gas model, and while it costs more than the other Sportage variants, it offers the best performance and claimed economy figures, too. We have included the Chevrolet Equinox here to represent the bottom end of the reliability table, its 17/100 score is dismal, yet it remains a popular choice in this segment. Who said consumers were logical?KiaThe Kia Sportage, in all its powertrain options, slots in just above the average rankings overall, and while the predicted reliability scores are tempered by the uncertainty of the new tech that has just been introduced with this year's facelift, it should improve its results in the coming months. If you are in the market for a well-built and capable compact SUV, the Sportage should definitely be on your shortlist.Data Sources:All vehicle data, pricing figures, and technical specifications were sourced from the official manufacturer websites.Pricing figures represent the base manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) and exclude destination charges, and taxes.AdvertisementAdvertisementThis story was originally published by Autoblog on Jul 5, 2026, where it first appeared in the Features section.
