Jeep's Newest Wrangler Wears Cowboy HatsStellantisJeep announced a new special-edition Laredo trim as part of a yearlong campaign celebrating Jeep's 85th anniversary. The Wrangler Laredo wears retro-modern styling, a tan softtop roof, and upgraded off-roading gear. The Laredo trim will tack $1995 onto the price of a Wrangler Willys with the Xtreme 35 package. Orders will open later this month. After a nearly 40-year hiatus, the Laredo name is returning to the Jeep Wrangler. The automaker says it's inspired by the rugged, adventurous spirit of a Texas border town along the Rio Grande. When you picture this decked-out Wrangler, in other words, you should be thinking of cowboys on the range, with the Laredo as their chosen steed.Laredo first appeared in the early '80s as a higher-quality trim on the off-road-focused CJ-5. It remained an option when the Wrangler replaced the CJ, but it's been decades since a Wrangler bore the Laredo name. The return of the four-wheeled cowboy is a chance for enthusiasts to get a bite of the Wrangler's gnarly roots.StellantisOn the outside, the 2027 Wrangler Laredo features large, retro-inspired graphics that follow the contour of the hood. A matching stripe flanks the fenders and side panels, and the Laredo name sits along the curved edges of the hood in rugged capital letters. Bronze accents, including tow hooks and badging, are scattered throughout. The tan soft top returns, and a matching sand-colored grille brings a Texas desert aesthetic to the front of the car. At the rear, a lasso-style font spells "4WD."AdvertisementAdvertisementThe cabin is similarly styled, with cowboy hats on the air vent covers, bison brown nappa leather seats, Mayan Gold stitching, a custom badge on the center console, and a plaque on the rear swing gate that displays a map of Laredo, Texas.Underneath the styling, the Wrangler Laredo sits on a Wrangler Willys platform and houses a 285-hp 3.6-liter V-6 engine. The Laredo requires the Xtreme 35 package, which upgrades to bronze 17-inch wheels wrapped in 35-inch BFGoodrich KO2 tires and adds performance brakes, wheel flare extensions, and a higher rear axle ratio. This release is the ninth of 12 special-edition Wranglers in Jeep's Twelve 4 Twelve Wrangler Series—a campaign inspired by the U.S. military's World War II strategy of airdropping Jeeps to troops overseas. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, if you're not keen on midair jostling and parachute-related paint scratches, these Jeeps won't get delivered with quite as much gusto.StellantisStill, the 2027 Wrangler Laredo—as well as the rest of the collection—is a tangible way to celebrate Jeep's extensive history. The limited-edition trim is available on two- or four-door 2027 Wranglers and are set to go on sale later this month. Jeep says the Laredo trim will add $1995 to a Wrangler Willys with the Xtreme 35 package, which brings the starting cost to around $48,000.➡️ Skip the lot.
