The worry could intensify if owners are asked to park their vehicles outside, as a potential fire could spread to nearby objects if the vehicle is parked in a garage. That is what Stellantis just did through a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall, which mentions two Jeep models that have been affected by this issue.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe 2021-2025 Jeep Wrangler and the 2021-2025 Jeep Gladiator have been affected by a problem related to the electric hydraulic power steering pump (EHPSP) and have thus been recalled.NHTSA Reveals Cause of the Problem Affecting 1,076,999 VehiclesImage Credit: HJUdall - Own work, CC0/Wiki Commons.According to the NHTSA recall report, 787,887 units of the Jeep Wrangler and 289,112 units of the Jeep Gladiator have been included in the recall population. The problem stems from "high resistance electrical activity may take place in the area of the EHPSP connection causing overheating of combustible materials," the report stated.Overheating of combustible materials in the affected area could spark a fire, resulting in a risk of injury to occupants of the vehicle and even to people outside the vehicle who are nearby.AdvertisementAdvertisementTo detect the issue in advance, affected owners have been advised to look out for a loss of power steering assist or a "Service Power Steering" Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC).The report explains that FCA US LLC investigated fires originating at the EHPSP electrical connection in certain Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator vehicles between May 2023 and April 2024. However, the investigation was closed because of the low rate of occurrence. But in August 2024, FCA reopened the investigation due to increasing incidents originating at the EHPSP electrical connection, which went on for many months. It was only in April 2026 that "FCA US confirmed a loose electrical connection," which could result in melting and eventually lead to a fire. The recall report added:AdvertisementAdvertisement"As of May 18, 2026, FCA US is not aware of any accidents and 1 injury potentially related to this issue for all markets."On May 28, 2026, FCA US determined, through the Vehicle Regulations Committee, that a safety defect exists in certain vehicles."Remedy Program for Affected OwnersRevealing the remedy program for Jeep owners affected by the recall, the report stated:"FCA US will conduct a voluntary safety recall on all affected vehicles to inspect and repair or replace affected parts as necessary. Out of an abundance of caution, FCA US is advising owners of these vehicles to park away from structures or other vehicles until the remedy is obtained."AdvertisementAdvertisementThe report added that dealers were notified about the recall schedule on June 11, 2026, while owners will be notified on July 9, 2026.Jeep Announced Recall of 419,035 Vehicles Over Delayed AirbagsGuessing Headlights recently reported another recall involving Jeep, which affected 419,035 vehicles. The issue stems from a faulty door airbag pressure sensor that could delay the deployment of the side airbags in certain types of crashes. The issue "may reduce occupant protection in the event of certain types of crashes, potentially resulting in an increased risk of injury to motor vehicle occupants."The NHTSA revealed that 140,130 units of the 2022-2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 278,905 units of the Jeep Grand Cherokee L have been affected by the side airbag (SAB) issue.AdvertisementAdvertisementOwners may notice a continuously illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster due to the problem. In addition, a chime will also sound at each ignition cycle.According to the NHTSA's recall report, FCA US will issue a recall to reprogram the ORC. The updated ORC software will recalibrate the airbags to deploy at the right time.
