We've all got a lot of stuff piling up in our garage, normally including a box of random cables and three broken lawnmowers. But not many people have an iconic sports sedan from the '70s sitting in their lock-up waiting for someone to discover it. If anyone was going to find this peach of a Bavarian Wunderlimousine, it would be Jonny Smith, barn find guru, fleece aficionado and face of The Late Brake Show. The question is though: will it start? This Special '70s BMW Deserves Restoration This episode of Jonny Smith's barn find section of The Late Brake Show starts like any other. That is, with Smith standing next to a concrete garage (graffiti optional) in a fleece, with the weather in the UK looking like eternal winter. But while most of Smith's barn finds are pretty special, this one will blow your mind, especially if you are a fan of Alpina-liveried BMWs (that will be all of us then). The first job is to shift all the boxes and skateboards (yes, really) off the car to better inspect the condition. The E12 BMW 528 was the pride-and-joy of owner Sarah's late father, being put into storage in 1988 in immaculate condition. The car was used to its fullest, with Sarah saying she would be in the passenger seat on "cop watch", keeping an eye out for police speed traps on the bridges. "He did have fun," she says smiling. The E12 BMW Has Been In A Garage For Almost 40 Years YouTube/ The Late Brake Show Sadly, the Beemer isn't in such good condition anymore. The car is covered in moss, with the windows open, and a lot of visible rust on the panels. Smith's friend "BMW Tony" is on hand to help out, but warns that E12s "rust notoriously—they look OK on the outside but rust underneath." Having taken the pads out of the seized calipers, the Polaris Silver 5-Series sees the light of day for the first time in almost 40 years. If you like your German sedans with a bit of patina, then this BMW looks the business. Another way of looking at it is that it has chronic rust in strange places, such as the door frames. But now it is time to see if the carburetor engine in this BMW 5-Series will fire up. It's Time To See If The 5-Series Will Run YouTUbe/ The Late Brake Show Sadly it's not to be. The spark plugs are seized in the engine, and the engine seems seized as well. "Someone will save this car," says Smith, and we hope that is true. For Sarah, it was an emotional day—proof that for most of us, cars hold a special place in our lives and are tied to so many memories. And if you live anywhere near picturesque Devon and fancy a BMW that might be a little more than a weekend project, you can give The Late Brake Show a shout as the car's now for sale.
