Hyundai has a fix for the Palisade rear seat recall. Weeks after a tragedy that involved the power-adjusting seats in the 2026 Hyundai Palisade and the death of a child, the automaker has released a fix. According to NHTSA documents, Hyundai has started rolling out the software update that it says will change how the seats work. Hopefully preventing the danger from happening again. Danger Of Crushing From Folding Seats Hyundai In early March, Hyundai announced an urgent recall that covered 2026 Palisade SUVs including the hybrid models, involving the higher-end Limited and Calligraphy trim grades. The automaker had learned of the death of a young child who was trapped by the power-folding rear seats. That incident is under investigation by authorities.Hyundai immediately started a warning campaign that included the recall along with sending e-mails and voicemails to owners. It also sent out a warning message on the vehicle's infotainment screen and the Hyundai app advising that "the 2nd and 3rd row power seats in your 2026 Palisade or Palisade Hybrid may not adequately detect contact with an occupant or object as intended in certain situations."Hyundai On April 3, it started the campaign to send out the fix to vehicles over the air. This started with notifications sent to the vehicle advising of an "Important OTA Update for Safety Recall 296." Owners with an active Bluelink subscription can download the update over-the-air. All owners can also contact a Hyundai dealer to arrange for the software update.According to Hyundai's software notes, the update changes the operating logic for the second and third-row power seat folding functions. The key changes are: Tailgate must be open to use the seat stow function The folding and stowing controls in the infotainment screen have been disabled Seat and cargo area fold switches now require press and hold operation Second row walk-in (tilt) function now uses press and hold to access the third row, with a combination of one touch to return the seat and press and hold of the seatback recline switch during return. Updated Detection Logic The updated software version is 26.4.1. Owners can see if they have the most recent version by accessing the vehicle menu then selecting General - System Info. Software Info/Update will let owners check for software updates. No Fix Yet For Kia Telluride Kia The 2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid also has a recall for this rear seat issue, and it applies to all grades with the power-folding rear seat. Kia has implemented a new software version for vehicles in production, but it has not yet been pushed as an over-the-air update and is not yet available at dealers. Owners of these Kia SUVs should watch for a similar message on their in-vehicle infotainment screen and can also check for updates through the system. We urge all owners of the affected models to get this recall fix completed ASAP. If you are unable to complete the fix, then owners of the Kia and Hyundai models should closely monitor any occupants when using the power rear seat tilt and fold functions.
