This is the future of AMG. The performance arm of Mercedes-Benz is up north in Sweden, testing out its latest fast sedan based on the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan. This isn't the six-cylinder replacement for the much-hated C63 four-cylinder, though; this is something worse. Or better, depending on your feelings about electricity. This is the AMG C-Class EQ, an electric vehicle that could make up to 800 horsepower when it hits the market. New Active Rear Spoiler CarBuzz/Valnet The CarBuzz spies focus on this car's paint, which you can see through tiny cut-outs in the camouflage wrap. Showing the smallest bit of the real color is one of the stranger things that automakers do on prototypes, but it is a pretty blue. Normally, these cars are grey, black, or white. Far too boring for an AMG model.Only faint signs of this being an AMG are visible. The drilled brake rotors are the most obvious, with standard Mercedes-Benz models not getting that feature. The large wheels are another sign. They could also be the final design (in a non-standard color) because this is the first time we've spotted prototypes of this model with a matching set. There's one, even clearer sign, though, at the back of this car.CarBuzz/Valnet This prototype has a large active spoiler. That's not something we're used to seeing on AMG's vehicles, and we haven't seen it on this sedan before. Prior versions didn't even seem to be hiding one, and looking back we can't see cutlines in the wrap before. No doubt the spoiler will help with the car's aerodynamic balance, not necessarily front and rear lift, but drag versus downforce. The trade-off between range and performance is crucial for EV buyers, where owners are far more concerned with range than on a thirsty gas V8 engine. Electric AMG Sports Sedan Could Make 800 Hp CarBuzz/Valnet Mercedes-Benz is building the C-Class AMG EV on the same platform as the GLC EQ that was revealed last September. Like that vehicle, it will have an 800-volt electrical system for ultra-fast charging and silicon carbide inverters for high efficiency and power output.Based on the first GLC EVs, we anticipate that this new C-Class could make between 600 and 800 horsepower. We've heard mixed reports as to what motors will go under the car, but the possibilities include Benz's eATS 2.0 motors, or the YASA axial flux motors found in the Concept AMG GT XX and expected for the new electric AMG GT. The latter motors deliver incredible power density and output, with the concept car making 1,341 horsepower from a trio of them. The current AMG C 63 S E-Performance plug-in hybrid pairs a 2.0-liter four with an electric motor to make 671-horsepower and 752 pound-feet of torque. That gas-powered model is set to be replaced by a 443-horsepower 3.0-liter I6. That would, at least theoretically, let AMG get away with less power in the EQ model. We can't see that happening, though, and would guess that this EV will be closer to 800 hp than 600.Mercedes AMG C EV 6
