Honda Reveals New Details about Next Hybrid SystemHondaHonda announced details on its next-generation hybrid system, including its official name, which is simply "Honda Hybrid."The new system will arrive in 2027 and will be based around a new platform, which Honda says is more rigid while weighing less. The hybrid system will support all-wheel drive and will appear in 15 models that will arrive by 2030.Honda's hybrid models are some of the best on the market right now, with the Civic Hybrid, Accord Hybrid, and CR-V Hybrid all earning a spot on our 2026 10Best awards list. Still, Honda isn't resting on its laurels and is developing a next-generation hybrid system that will expand to even more models in its lineup. Today, Honda announced the name of this new system and a few key details.Don't get too excited about that name, however, because it's about as uninspired as it gets. Honda says the official name of its next-generation hybrid system is "Honda Hybrid." Yeah, that's it. Some marketing agency probably got paid a lofty sum to come up with that zinger.A prototype for the next-generation Civic Hybrid.HondaLame name aside, the new hybrid system sounds promising. These next-generation hybrid models will ride on a new platform, which Honda says has improved rigidity despite a focus on weight reduction. The company states this was achieved through the "adoption of a new approach to body rigidity management which brings about vehicle behavior as if the body is flexing during cornering and improving roadholding performance."This sounds similar to claims that Honda made about its 0-series EV platform back in 2024, before the company scrapped its planned EVs in early 2026 at a cost of $15.8 billion. Thankfully, it seems at least some of the learnings from that expensive, ill-fated experiment are being put to use.Honda also confirmed that this new hybrid system will be offered with a newly developed all-wheel-drive system. Details on the all-wheel-drive setup are unknown for now. Honda also says that it downsized the drive unit and expanded the high-efficiency operating range of the engine to further improve the fuel economy of its hybrid models.Honda showed the Hybrid Sedan prototype earlier this year.HondaThe system will build on the success of Honda's current two-motor hybrid system, and we expect it to continue with two electric motors paired with a four-cylinder engine in vehicles such as the Civic, Accord, and CR-V. Back in 2025, we drove a next-generation Civic Hybrid prototype featuring a new 2.0-liter engine, a pair of electric motors, and a new battery. However, Honda has also discussed a V-6 hybrid system for its larger vehicles, which would add a third electric motor on the rear axle for all-wheel-drive variants. The new system will start appearing in Honda vehicles in 2027. Honda says that by the end of March 2030, the company will launch 15 models with this next-generation hybrid system, with the majority of those destined for North America. The Civic, Accord, and CR-V are presumably part of that plan, with next-generation models set to arrive within the next year or so, and we also know that Acura, Honda's luxury brand, is planning to launch a new RDX Hybrid soon. We also expect to see hybrid versions of Honda's mid-size offerings, including the Pilot, Passport, and Ridgeline, along with the Acura MDX. These models will likely feature a V-6 and all-wheel drive.➡️ Skip the lot.
