Honda Recalling 1 Million+ Cars Over a Bottle CapHonda Newsroom (Honda Newsroom)It's not every day that Honda recalls more than one million units of its bread-and-butter models, and especially not when the cause behind the recall is so unusual. However, waves of CR-V and Accord owners will be heading back to the dealership soon for an inspection ... because a bottle cap might fly off, per a new National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall. The Japanese automaker announced the issue, which encompasses 1,049,883 vehicles, on June 4. 2023–2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid, 2025–2026 Honda CR-V Fuel Cell EV, and 2023–2026 Accord Hybrid models are included in the recall. Federal regulators say that pressure may build inside the tire sealant bottle if it is improperly connected to the tire valve, potentially causing the bottle cap to detach. In other words, the tire sealant bottle can explode, spraying sealant all over the surrounding area.Michael Simari (Michael Simari)"During development of the flat tire repair kit (TRK), the design did not adequately account for pressure buildup that could occur if the nozzle were improperly connected, resulting in the inclusion of an unnecessary fluid leak prevention valve. Additionally, certain relief valves were improperly adjusted during supplier manufacturing, preventing pressure from being released as intended," NHTSA recall documents read.AdvertisementAdvertisementFederal regulators say that if the bottle cap detaches, the risk of injury increases. It is not immediately clear if NHTSA officials are worried about slipping on leaked fluid or about the bottle explosion itself. Regardless, only one percent of the million units are estimated to exhibit the fault. That doesn't make it any less serious, though; Honda has logged eight reports of injury connected to the issue, according to federal documents.Honda (Honda)Honda first learned about the issue in April 2023, but the automaker wasn't able to obtain parts for analysis until August 2024. The investigation continued through January 2025, until Honda investigators claimed that customer misuse of the tire repair kit was to blame in April 2025. A few months later, Honda received a report of an injury related to the faulty tire repair kit. However, it wasn't until March 2026 that the automaker identified a manufacturing fault in the kit. All told, Honda has recorded 53 warranty claims related to the tire repair kit fault. The fix is simple: Honda will replace the tire repair kit nozzle or sealant bottle with one that features a two-way valve. Similarly, Honda says production of this specific tire repair kit was altered to May 2026 to remedy the issue for future models. You Might Also LikeIf You Can Only Own One Car, Make It One of TheseThese Are the Most Popular Cars by State
