GM’s New HD Pickup Truck Engine Is an 8.3-Liter Behemoth Known As ‘Mongoose’Road & TrackWill Sabel CourtneyMon, September 21, 2026 at 2:00 PM UTCAdd us on GoogleGM's New HD Diesel Engine Displaces 8.3 LitersGeneral MotorsGeneral Motors is in the midst of a full-bore revitalization effort when it comes to its truck line these days. In the last few weeks, GM has been rolling out details about its new 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 models, including deep dives into their new V-8 motors. On Monday, the company offered up an initial peek at the powerplant set to top the range in its next heavy duty pickup truck models: a massive 8.3-liter turbodiesel Duramax V-8 that goes by the name "Mongoose."It seems, at first blush, like an odd name for an engine that displaces nearly as much as two 12-packs of regular-size Budweiser cans; a mongoose is hardly known for its bulk or brute strength. (And it's certainly not quite as cool a name as the rumored moniker of "Megamax.") But as the teaser video reminds all of us who haven't watched the Discovery Channel since Steve Irwin's tragic passing, the mongoose is the natural predator of the scorpion ... which just so happens to be the internal code-name used by one Ford Motor Company for the 6.7-liter turbodiesel V-8 found under the hood of its F-Series Super Duty pickups. The clip, which seems destined to play between quarters during Monday Night Football games, is laden with Easter eggs that poke fun at the Blue Oval—in one case, literally throwing shade, in the form of the GMC logo—hidden amongst its depiction of an AI-generated mongoose fighting an equally computer-created scorpion in the desert. (There's also a CGI snake hiding on the sidelines, which feels like a veiled shot at Dodge/Ram.)The clip is light on details like power, torque, or max towing capacity, but considering the constant game of HD truck one-upsmanship among the Big Three, it seems likely that the new Duramax will claim top honors in at least one of those categories. More details about the heavy duty Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra are expected to arrive soon, and you can bet any Ford-shaming specs will be right at the front of the press release. You Might Also LikeIf You Can Only Own One Car, Make It One of TheseThese Are the Most Popular Cars by State
