GM revamps 2027 Silverado and Sierra infotainment systemQuartzCris TolomiaUpdatedWed, September 16, 2026 at 2:05 PM UTCAdd us on GoogleGM revamps 2027 Silverado and Sierra infotainment systemGeneral Motors unveiled a new in-vehicle user interface on Tuesday, debuting first on the redesigned 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and 2027 GMC Sierra pickup trucks before expanding to other models in its lineup. The most prominent change in the new system is how it handles Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Rather than surrendering the entire display to CarPlay or Android Auto, the new interface keeps those projection systems in a split-screen panel beside native GM apps — including trailering metrics and vehicle status — so both are visible at once. GM said it worked with Apple and Google on the approach."The thought here is that these should coexist and you should get the best of both worlds," Colin McCormick, a GM product manager overseeing in-vehicle phone projection, told CNBC during a demo of the system in a new GMC Sierra.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe new interface also brings significant visual updates to GM's Super Cruise driver assistance system. The driver cluster screen will now render surrounding vehicles, pedestrians, lane markings, and road objects in a 3D view, giving drivers a real-time depiction of what the vehicle detects. The system previously did not display the surrounding environment in this way, according to CNBC.Other changes include a redesigned home screen with a default split-view layout pairing a full interactive map with information such as fuel efficiency data or media controls. Incoming calls and messages are designed to appear as a smaller overlay rather than a full-screen takeover, and drivers can organize quick-access controls around their most-used apps. For truck-specific use, the interface automatically adapts when a trailer is connected, surfacing a dedicated trailering display in the instrument cluster and a trailering card on the center screen. A Hitch View camera assists with trailer alignment, and drivers can run trailer light checks — testing brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights, and running lights — from their smartphone. GM said it remains the only automaker to offer hands-free trailering with Super Cruise. The passenger front screen supports streaming services including Disney+, Hulu, YouTube, and others, with polarized screen technology limiting visibility to the passenger while the vehicle is in motion. The system also integrates Google Gemini, Google Maps, and Google Play apps. GM said the interface will receive updates through over-the-air software delivery.AdvertisementAdvertisementSebastian Bauer, GM's executive director of human interface design and a former Apple and Google executive, said the redesign was part of a deliberate organizational shift, moving digital experience operations under the design function. "Our job is to make sure that we reduce cognitive load, and we give people the information that they need to see at the moment when they see it," Bauer told CNBC.GM said earlier this year that CarPlay and Android Auto would remain in all GM gas-powered vehicles for the foreseeable future, following reports that CEO Mary Barra had suggested the company might phase them out. CarPlay and Android Auto were dropped from GM's electric vehicle lineup years ago, replaced by an in-house infotainment platform, according to Engadget. GM has offered no indication of whether CarPlay will ever return to its electric vehicle lineup.
