Image: Delta ChargeAccording to the project partners, Weihenstephan is among the first major breweries in Germany to operate a battery-backed fast-charging hub for electric trucks. The companies state that the system enables lower overall operating costs than diesel-powered transport, creating a business case for broader fleet electrification. The logistics centre has been configured as a fully integrated energy solution. Two ceiling-mounted DC fast chargers with an output of 150 kW each are supplied by a modular battery energy storage system. The storage system initially provides 125 kW of power and 257 kWh of energy capacity and can be expanded to 375 kW and 771 kWh as the brewery’s electric truck fleet grows. The battery storage system is integrated with an existing 380 kWp photovoltaic installation at the site. Delta Charge says the interaction between solar generation, battery storage and charging operations is managed by its proprietary AI-supported energy management platform. The software continuously optimises energy flows with the aim of reducing grid dependency and lowering electricity costs.Weihenstephan advances fleet decarbonisationThe project is part of Weihenstephan’s broader sustainability strategy and its efforts to decarbonise logistics operations. The brewery describes the electrification of its truck fleet as a further milestone in its long-term environmental programme.“Since almost one thousand years, Weihenstephan has stood for quality, craftsmanship and responsibility – towards our beer specialities, our region and future generations,” said Prof. Dr Josef Schrädler, Director of the Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan. “The electrification of our fleet is a natural expression of this responsibility and a concrete step on our path towards full decarbonisation.”Schrädler added that the fully electrified logistics centre strengthens the company’s efforts to reduce emissions while building on a facility already designed around energy-efficient construction principles. Robert Winkler, Ministerial Director and head of the ministry’s climate protection department, described the initiative as a model for other companies.“From a climate policy perspective, the State Brewery Weihenstephan has embarked on a path with its transition to e-mobility as part of an integrated energy concept that can only be described as exemplary,” said Winkler. “As a company of the Free State of Bavaria, it is fulfilling its role model function. I would like to see as many imitators as possible.”Partners highlight scalability of the conceptDelta Charge, a German-Swedish developer of charging and battery storage solutions for electric trucks founded in Munich in 2024, specialises in charging and battery storage solutions for logistics and industrial operators. The German-Swedish company develops, finances and operates truck charging parks and battery-supported industrial energy hubs. At the end of last year, Delta Charge secured $4.3 million in equity in an oversubscribed financing round. And backed by battery storage developer Delta Capacity, the company plans to invest more than €300 million in infrastructure by 2030 and aims to provide customers with 1.8 TWh of green electricity annually. The partners see the project as reflecting two major developments in Europe’s transport and energy sectors: the increasing adoption of battery-electric heavy goods vehicles and the growing role of stationary battery storage in enabling economically viable fleet electrification. In addition to reducing energy costs, battery storage systems can improve resilience against grid fluctuations and rising electricity prices.“The Weihenstephan brewery and Delta Charge have built something truly special together,” said Johannes Kirnberger, Managing Director of Delta Charge. “Even more exciting is that we are only at the beginning of the transformation. Our concept works both technically and economically, and we are ready to establish it across logistics and industry throughout Europe.”Source: Information vie e-mail
