Further details from the August 22 climb provide a closer look at how the 2.98-tonne unibody EREV handled thin air, steep loose terrain and prolonged electric-drive operation, reports IT Home. The run surpassed the previous hybrid benchmark of 5,980.05 meters, set by BYD’s Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5 in July 2024, by 22.28 meters. Freelander 8 pushes into thin air The ascent covered about 1,480 meters of trail with a 200-meter vertical rise across loose scree and unpaved shale. At 6,000 meters, ambient pressure falls to about 47.2 kPa, reducing available oxygen partial pressure to less than half that at sea-level conditions. Chery-JLR said the Freelander 8’s 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder range extender retained 80% of its rated generating capacity during the climb. Maintaining similar output in thin air requires the turbocharger to compensate for lower ambient pressure with a higher pressure ratio to deliver enough intake air. Two-speed rear drive targets the climb The Freelander 8 uses a dual-motor AWD EREV rated at 610 kW (818 hp), with a 360 kW (483 hp) front motor and 250 kW (335 hp) rear motor. The rear drive unit adds a two-speed reduction gearbox. In first gear, the system adds a 1.5-to-1 torque multiplication step, generating up to an equivalent 8,000 Nm of wheel-end torque. The lower gear effectively provides a low-range ratio for slow, steep climbs. For a given wheel-torque demand, it can reduce required motor torque and current, potentially lowering electrical losses and thermal load during sustained low-speed operation. That matters at altitude because thinner air also reduces the effectiveness of air-based heat rejection. The two-speed drive provides another way to generate high wheel torque without relying solely on higher motor torque. Guinness World Records certificate confirming the Freelander 8’s hybrid altitude record of 6,002.33 meters in Xizang (Tibet). Unibody SUV faces a different off-road test The record also contrasts with the previous benchmark vehicle. The Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5 uses BYD’s DMO platform with a body-on-frame, ladder-type chassis, while the Freelander 8 is a unibody SUV. It measures 5,118 mm in length, has a 3,040 mm wheelbase, and uses air suspension with continuously variable damping control. Chery-JLR said the Freelander 8 completed the climb without structural chassis damage, but it has not released post-climb inspection data or specified the tyres used. The record confirms the ascent, not long-term production-chassis durability under comparable conditions. Record run meets commercial launch Built at Chery-JLR’s Changshu assembly plant in Jiangsu Province, the SUV carries limited-time launch pricing of 289,900 to 379,900 yuan (approximately 41,000 to 53,700 USD), placing it in the broad price territory of the Li Auto L8 and Huawei-backed Aito M8. Its powertrain uses a 60.33 kWh CATL Freevoy NMC battery on an 800V electrical architecture. The vehicle also features Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 5 driver-assistance system with roof-mounted LiDAR and SAE Level 2 assistance. The 6,002.33-meter climb shows how the Freelander 8’s turbocharged range extender, dual-motor setup and two-speed rear drive handled thin air and steep terrain.
