Ford's Most Versatile V8 Crate Engines Just Got Even Better
Ford has a multitude of crate V8 engines on offer, but there are a few that stand out for versatility - the massive 7.3-liter Megazilla, the upgraded version of the Godzilla V8 found on Super Duty trucks, and the 5.0-liter Coyote found in the Mustang Dark Horse. Recognizing the steadily growing market for crate engines, according to Zion Market Research, Ford Performance has opted to give these off-the-shelf mills a major update to boost their performance and versatility, designed for either competition or road-legal use.

Ford is one of America's oldest automakers and one of the oldest in the world, popularized for being the first to effectively mass produce the automobile under Henry Ford with the Ford Model T. In over 120 years, Ford has become a sales leader in a variety of segments, with popular nameplates like the Ford F-150, Transit, and Mustang.

Supercharger For The Better
The Megazilla 2.0 builds on the foundation of its predecessor, which went on sale in 2023, incorporating advanced performance components such as forged pistons, connecting rods, a steel crank, ported and polished cylinder heads, and upgraded valve springs. Ford has taken this engine to the next level by pairing it with a Gen 6 3.0-liter Whipple Supercharger. The result? A projected output of more than 1,000 horsepower - a huge increase over the 615 hp of its naturally aspirated counterpart. This engine is specifically designed for competition use, such as desert racing pre-runners and dragstrip builds, making it unsuitable for street applications.
For those seeking a street-legal powerhouse, Ford has reworked the Mustang Dark Horse's 5.0-liter Coyote engine. The upgrades include a 3.0-liter supercharger, a reprogrammed powertrain control module, and other enhancements, delivering a projected 800+ hp and 615 lb-ft of torque - just enough to rival Shelby American’s newly introduced GT350. This engine promises impressive straight-line speed as well as performance on the track, with Ford emphasizing its suitability for a variety of driving conditions. It also comes with an available two-year or 24,000-mile limited warranty.

The supercharged Coyote and the Megazilla 2.0 crate engines will be available for order through local Ford dealerships and Ford Performance Parts in the final few months of 2025. Pricing hasn’t been disclosed yet, but note that these engines aren’t cheap; the naturally aspirated Megazilla retails for nearly $23,000, while the Gen 4 Coyote V8 is priced at $15,000. The Blue Oval emphasizes the versatility of these crate engines, encouraging enthusiasts to use them in various custom builds to create their dream vehicles.
