Ford Bronco Filson Edition RevealedMotorTrend - MotorTrend (MotorTrend - MotorTrend)Remember that Ford Bronco concept from 2020, the Wildland Fire Rig in green that imagined what an off-road Bronco outfitted for the United States Forest Service would look like?Well, it looks like Ford is going to put a version of that into production, in collaboration with Filson, the Seattle-based outdoor outfitter that worked with Ford on the original concept.Turns out we’ll have to wait until June 3 to see what it looks like. There will be a debut somewhere in the Pacific Northwest, and that’s when we’ll get details of the vehicle.AdvertisementAdvertisementSince Ford has already generated a QR code for handraisers, we assume the sale date is soon, and likely as part of the 2027 Bronco lineup. If it follows the concept’s lead, the Filson would be based on a four-door Bronco Badlands with the off-road Sasquatch package with its 35-inch tires, a Ford Performance steel bumper with a Warn winch, custom roof rack with LED light bars, and sporting Forest Service green paint. The concept was equipped with a 50-gallon water tank to fight fires, something the civilian models won’t need. It will likely use Ford’s 2.3-liter turbo inline-four and 10-speed automatic.Inside there’s durable duck canvas on the door handles, armrests, and seat trim. Expect the Filson logo to adorn the interior.Ford showed the Bronco Filson Fire Rig Concept in 2020.Ford (Ford)A True Member of the Bronco FamilyThe Ford Bronco Filson four-door SUV isn’t a limited edition; it is a full member of the Bronco family that seeks to grow with derivatives like the 2027 Ford Bronco RTR, a performance version that slots below the Bronco Raptor, according to Dave Rivers, head of Ford Enthusiast Brands. Mustang drift king Vaughn Gittin Jr. used to build his Bronco RTRs at an upfitter facility, but the 2027 model will come from the factory, rolling off the line at the Michigan Assembly Plant alongside the rest of the Bronco family, including the new Filson. Orders for the RTR open this fall with deliveries starting in January 2027. We’re guessing the Filson will have similar timing.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe special edition Broncos are part of a move to add a more premium element to the brand, something that customers have been asking for, Rivers said. The idea is for a premium truck that you can beat up and clean up, like you can with a Filson jacket. The collaboration with Filson makes sense: Rangers used Broncos back in the 1960s and ’70s, and Filson was outfitting them. Filson’s history dates back to 1897 when it provided clothing to those going to Alaska during the gold rush. It’s seen as a marriage of utility vehicle and gear for those who work and like to play.Durable Bronco meets durable Filson outfitter.MotorTrend - MotorTrend (MotorTrend - MotorTrend)People Liked the Fire Rig ConceptNeil Morgan, head of strategy at Filson, said the company had decided if it were to help dress a vehicle, it would be a vintage-era Bronco. The Fire Rig concept proved the two brands make a good pairing.Ford said reaction was positive to the Fire Rig concept; people liked the color scheme and how it paid homage to the Forest Service. It also spurred the automaker to launch the Bronco Wild Fund to help preserve the outdoors.AdvertisementAdvertisementFord has been working to boost what it calls its icon models, like Mustang and Bronco. The automaker has told media outlets that the Bronco outsold the Jeep Wrangler in April, although Stellantis has not publicly released April figures—it reports sales quarterly. If you go back to the first quarter, it was the Jeep that was on top with 44,461 rugged SUVs sold while Ford sold 31,197 Broncos during the first three months. That was a big 17 percent jump for Jeep and a 4.3 percent falloff for the Bronco. The sixth-generation Bronco hit the market in 2021. Last year was its best year with just over 146,000 total sales in the U.S., an increase of 30 percent from the prior year, but still not enough to knock the Wrangler off the top of the podium with more than 167,000 sales. One difference: Jeep has more fleet sales.2027 Ford Super Duty Carhartt.Ford - MotorTrend (Ford - MotorTrend)Ford Super Duty Carhartt CollaborationThe Bronco Filson follows another collaboration Ford recently announced with a different storied clothing brand: the 2027 Ford Super Duty Carhartt. The workwear company and Ford designed a package that will be available on the XLT Crew Cab single-rear-wheel 4x4 pickup. The package is $4,195 and deliveries start this fall.
