The Ford Maverick has been a hit ever since it launched back in 2021. As a midsize pickup truck, it offers unparalleled fuel efficiency numbers compared to its heavier counterparts. In the past, economy has never been the first word that pops up when it comes to pickup trucks, but going hybrid changed that forever. Now, trucks can sip fuel while carrying vast amounts of goods in their bed or satisfying all your towing needs. The Maverick is so good, in fact, that the Ford compact pickup even features in our best new pickup truck ratings list for 2026. It is also so efficient that it won our ranking for the most efficient non-electric truck currently on sale! So, if fuel economy is a top priority, and you still want an ICE powering your truck, here are the most fuel efficient trims of the Ford Maverick, from the lowest to the highest. All mpg ratings are sourced directly from the EPA and the cars have been ranked in terms of their combined mpg, using city and highway mpg as a tiebreaker where necessary. All data is correct at the time of writing. We list these from least to most efficient. 2026 Ford Maverick Tremor AWD 23 MPG Combined FordKey features at a glance: 17-inch all-terrain tires Elevated ride height Off-road-tuned suspension Electronic-locking rear differential with four-wheel drive Orange exterior and interior accents The Ford Maverick Tremor is the off-road focused trim of the Maverick line. Thus, it comes as no surprise that it is also the least fuel efficient. There are several factors working against the Tremor's fuel efficiency numbers. Firstly, it does not get the hybrid engine option; this might give more power overall, but it limits how far you can go on a tank of gas. Then, the elevated ride height for off-road trails and all-terrain tires make the car less aerodynamically efficient on the road, bringing these numbers even lower. The Tremor is also only available as a four-wheel drive model, adding not only extra weight for the mechanicals, but also meaning that all four wheels draw power, further lowering efficiency. If going off-road is your priority, this is the most capable trim of the Maverick on dirt trails, just not the most fuel efficient. 2026 Ford Maverick Lobo AWD 24 MPG Combined Christopher Smith / CarBuzz / ValnetKey features at a glance: 19-inch turbofan-styled black-painted wheels Lowered ride height Track-tuned suspension Lobo Mode (track use only) Unique front grille with fog lamps and black roof The Maverick platform seems to be a jack of all trades. Especially after 2025, when Ford added the Lobo trim for the truck. This is the complete opposite to the aforementioned Tremor model. The Lobo is meant to be the most capable trim on the road, with a lowered, tuned suspension and a dedicated track mode, just like it's extremely distant cousin, the Ford GT. Nevertheless, the Maverick Lobo also does not get the hybrid engine option. The extra 60 hp is great for on-road performance, but works against it when it comes to fuel economy. The truck features unique to the Lobo include a different grille, a body-colored front end, a black roof and massive 19-inch fan-blade rims. Just like the Tremor, the Lobo is also only available as a four-wheel-drive model, which does not help with fuel efficiency. The larger rims further hinder efficiency, but the truck manages to eke in as only the second-worst in fuel economy for the lineup. Thus, it's still respectable for a pickup truck."[The Lobo trim is] a lot more fun on the back road than the XLT, and that's all about the extra grip and braking. You can legitimately chuck the Lobo into a corner in Sport mode and chuckle as you pop out the other side, with the rear giving a little drift if you choose, and the steering allows a surprising amount of precision."- Jared Rosenholtz, Editor-At-Large, CarBuzz 2026 Ford Maverick XL/XLT 2.0L AWD 25 MPG Combined FordKey features at a glance: 17-inch carbonized gray-painted aluminum wheels (XLT Trim) 2K trailer hitch receiver with 4-pin connector (XLT Trim) 17-inch sparkle-silver steel wheels (XL Trim) Cruise control as standard (XL Trim) Pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking (XL Trim) For fuel efficiency, the standard, entry-level Ford Maverick trims are usually the best. This is mostly because they feature smaller wheels and rims, reducing the truck's drag coefficient. For the Maverick, the cheaper XL and XLT come with two engine options, but like the Lobo and Tremor trims, we will look at each with the 2.0L non-hybrid engine first. Even with the smaller 17-inch rims, these trims offer a lower economy with a combined rating of 25 mpg, according to the EPA. All-wheel drive is a $1,000 option when compared to the FWD variants, and is marginally worse in fuel economy, as the engine has to send power to four wheels instead of two. 2026 Ford Maverick XL/XLT 2.0L FWD 26 MPG Combined FordKey features at a glance: 17-inch carbonized gray-painted aluminum wheels (XLT Trim) 2K trailer hitch receiver with 4-pin connector (XLT Trim) 17-inch sparkle-silver steel wheels (XL Trim) Cruise control as standard (XL Trim) Pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking (XL Trim) The cheapest Ford Maverick configuration is next on the list. Thanks to the points mentioned above, the XL/XLT FWD trims are not just the cheapest, but also the most efficient 2.0-liter non-hybrid Maverick currently on sale. Without an all-wheel drivetrain further weighing them down, they manage to eke out an extra one mile per gallon in the combined cycle. So long as you don't really need the extra traction for regular off-roading, or to deal with problematic road conditions, you can save that $1,000 and also manage to keep a few bucks extra in your wallet at the pumps. 2026 Ford Maverick Lariat Hybrid AWD 36 MPG Combined FordKey features at a glance: 19-inch machined painted aluminum wheels Ford Co-Pilot360 driver-assist technology 360-degree camera Post-collision braking 2K trailer hitch receiver with four-pin connector As soon as we get to the 2.5L hybrid engine options, fuel efficiency sees a massive increase. The Lariat can be seen as the top-of-the-line Ford Maverick, cheaper only than the off-road-focused Tremor trim. The Lariat comes loaded with technology, such as Ford's ADAS system called Co-Pilot. It also comes with power-adjustable front seats with lumbar support and an eight-speaker B&O sound system. In terms of the powertrain, the Lariat is only available as an AWD variant, which is great for slippery and icy conditions, but not the best to get the most out of your tank. Despite that, from this trim forward, the Ford Maverick Hybrid models only see incremental upgrades to their efficiency. 2026 Ford Maverick XL/XLT 2.5L Hybrid AWD 37 MPG Combined FordKey features at a glance: 17-inch Carbonized Gray-painted aluminum wheels (XLT Trim) 2K trailer hitch receiver with four-pin connector (XLT Trim) 17-inch sparkle-silver steel wheels (XL Trim) Cruise control as standard (XL Trim) Pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking (XL Trim) Just like the non-hybrid versions, the base trims of the Maverick continue to lead the way in terms of efficiency. This time, the hybrid powertain gives the Maverick some of the best fuel efficiency of any non-EV pickup truck currently on sale. The XL/XLT trims are ahead of the Lariat even though they also have the AWD, which can be attributed to their smaller tires and lowered overall weight. Part of this is due to the reduced number of features on the truck, but the overall result is that the engine does not have to work as hard to move more weight. These versions of the XL and XLT are only beaten in terms of fuel efficiency but their FWD variants. 2026 Ford Maverick XL/XLT 2.5L Hybrid FWD 38 MPG Combined FordKey features at a glance: 17-inch Carbonized Gray-painted aluminum wheels (XLT Trim) 2K trailer hitch receiver with 4-pin connector (XLT Trim) 17-inch sparkle-silver steel wheels (XL Trim) Cruise control as standard (XL Trim) Pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking (XL Trim) The most fuel-efficient Ford Mavericks ever are the base XL/XLT FWD hybrid trims. The combination of the hybrid engine, only two powered wheels, and the lighter trims with smaller wheels makes for the perfect recipe for getting the most out of your tank. These versions of the Maverick will do north of 500 miles on a single tank, which is almost unheard of when it comes to midsize pickup trucks. While the hybrid engine option is not as powerful as the ICE-only engine, it should be plenty for an entry-level pickup truck. The Maverick, in its XLT form, can still tow 2,000 pounds and is rated to carry 1,500 pounds in its bed.
