Ford has issued a recall for 16,200 units of the 2021-2022 Ford Bronco vehicle due to a problem with the hard top roof that could delaminate or crack due to “environmental exposure.” This could lead to the top layer detaching and debris falling onto other motorists on the road.According to a recall report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 3-door and 5-door Ford Broncos manufactured between September 23, 2020, and January 13, 2022, have been affected. The report states:“Ford’s team reviewed supplier process records to determine the population of affected parts. Affected vehicles are equipped with 3-door and 5-door Molded-In-Color (MIC) hard tops that may exhibit delamination or cracking in the exterior skin of the roof panel that may progress to detachment of sections of the outer layer while driving.AdvertisementAdvertisement“This concern affects MIC hard tops on vehicles built between September 23, 2020 and January 13, 2022 for 3 door body styles, and between September 23, 2020 and October 22, 2021 for 5-door body styles.”a blue truck parked in a parking lotOwners Must Look Out for Cracking of the Outer LayerOwners of the 2021 and 2022 Ford Broncos may notice progressive delamination of sections of the hard top outer layer, or even “cracking in the exterior skin of the roof panel as a result of environmental exposure.”Some owners may even experience increased wind noise due to the problem, and in extreme cases, the delamination may worsen to the point where sections of the outer skin detach.Potential Safety Hazard for Other MotoristsWhile the disintegrating layer of the Bronco’s hard top may not pose a direct injury risk to occupants, it could create problems for other motorists. The NHTSA report stated:AdvertisementAdvertisement“Detachment of a section of the hard top outer layer while driving can create a road hazard for other road users, increasing the risk of a crash.”Describing the root cause of the problem, the report stated that Ford’s supplier processes were not optimized. It read:“During this time-period, supplier process and equipment parameters for MIC hard top manufacture were not optimized.”Ford had received 25 warranty claims by March 2026. The report added:“As of March 19, 2026, Ford is aware of 25 warranty claims, two field reports, and two customer complaints in the United States, received from December 21, 2021 to December 15, 2025, describing conditions that may lead to or have resulted in roof outer skin detachment for vehicles produced in the affected period.”Ford Bronco Hard Tops to be ReplacedOwners of the Ford Bronco will be asked to visit an authorized dealership for an inspection and, if necessary, replacement of the hard top. The recall report stated:AdvertisementAdvertisement“Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to inspect and replace vehicle hardtops that exhibit cracking and delamination per the supplied technical instructions. There will be no charge for this service.”
