Andreas Arnold/dpaStellantis plans to build and launch its first urban electric car to fit new EU guidelines in the coming two years, the Opel parent company said on Tuesday. The as-yet-unnamed vehicle is set to be small and affordable and to roll off the production line from 2028 at the Pomigliano plant in Italy, which currently produces the Fiat Panda.Stellantis said when asked that the expected price would be around €15,000.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe car is intended to meet the European Union's proposed "E car" specifications, which are designed to allow European manufacturers to build and market low-cost city cars in Europe. Achieving the target price range of €15,000 to €20,000 will likely require a relaxation of regulatory requirements. The model is inspired by Japanese kei cars, which are limited in size and power but serve as fully functional commuter vehicles. The car is expected to be sold under two of the group's brands and to be developed together with external partners.Stellantis recently announced a partnership with Chinese manufacturer Leapmotor for the next Opel model. Stellantis holds a minority stake of 21% in the Chinese start-up. Whether Leapmotor will also develop the new E-Car is unclear. The company already makes the T03, a model that is likely to largely meet the new specifications.Stellantis chief executive Antonio Filosa pointed to the group's long tradition of small cars, with brands such as Fiat and Peugeot. "Our customers are calling for a revival of small, stylish vehicles, proudly produced in Europe, which are also affordable and environmentally friendly. Stellantis is answering their call with exciting new models for multiple brands."Stellantis' as-yet-unnamed urban electric car is set to roll off the production line from 2028 at the Pomigliano plant, which currently produces the Fiat Panda (pictured).
