Image Credit: FiatIt might not be an all-American muscle car or a roaring hypercar, but the Fiat Topolino is certainly an eye-catching little thing. It is the perfect little car for using on a private road, around neighborhoods, or running around at the beach. But it's not road-legal on main public roads. So if you want to get from your home to the shops, or go on a short drive, you might find yourself in a little bit of trouble. Remember, however, that isn't what the little EV was designed to do. But things are about to change. The little Italian golf cart now has an optional Street Legal Conversion kit on the way. And as the name suggests, this means you can convert your Topolino into one of the cutest and quirkest road-legal cars in existence. And it doesn't sound like the conversion will be too complicated either.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe kit will allow the Topolino to be classed as a low-speed vehicle, and not as a golf cart. While you may not be able to do more than 35mph in the Fiat, it still means you will have an extra use for this quirky EV.How Do You Make the Fiat Topolino Road-Legal?Image Credit: FiatWhat makes the Street Legal Conversion kit even better is the price. There is none. Yes, you can get the kit for the Topolino at no extra cost, and it is a kit that will be provided officially by Fiat. With the EV going on sale in the United States, it feels like the perfect time to explore the upcoming kit. With the base model, which costs $14,985, customers can choose to have it delivered to them if they are within a 50-mile radius of their Fiat dealership. You can choose between the standard version or the doorless Dolcevita version that swaps the doors for ropes. If you want to take it onto public roads, this is where the extra kit comes into play.Road & Track reported on what the kit includes. The kit itself includes a new rearview mirror with a small screen integrated into it. When you go into reverse, the camera feeds the screen your reverse view. There is also an auditory pedestrian alert system that plays noise as the EV drives by at speeds of 19mph or below. Above that, the speaker shuts itself off. The EV also receives regulatory stickers and labels, as well as a proper VIN. Finally, the top speed is increased from 19mph to 25mph.What Roads Can You Drive the Topolino On?Image Credit: FiatWith these changes made, the Topolino could technically be driven home from the dealership. But there is a catch. The roads that you drive on have to have a top speed of no more than 35 mph. Speeds below that are also fine, as 35mph is the maximum federal speed limit that low-speed vehicles can drive on. That means for cities, smaller residential areas, and very short journeys on slower roads, the Topolino is perfect.AdvertisementAdvertisementThere are a couple of extra caveats too. For example, there are federal laws, so do your research before buying. For example, Delaware, Hawaii, Maryland, Missouri, and Rhode Island don't allow you to drive a low-speed vehicle on any public roads, even if other states do. But for those in the states where it is allowed, this conversion kit opens up a whole new host of possibilities for the little retro EV. The kit itself will be available from Fall 2026 onwards. If you want more stories like this, follow Guessing Headlights on Yahoo so you don't miss what's coming next.
