Eleven Illinois residents face federal charges over the alleged theft operation. Stolen vehicles allegedly included a 1972 Chevelle SS 454 and several race cars. Prosecutors say the crew repeatedly crossed state lines with the stolen vehicles. Stealing one classic car is presumably difficult enough, but federal prosecutors say a group of thieves around St. Louis took a decidedly more ambitious approach. They repeatedly returned to the same warehouse over and over, making off with everything from a 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 to vintage race cars and motorcycles in the process. Now, 11 people are facing federal charges over the alleged operation. A federal grand jury has charged 11 southern Illinois residents with crimes connected to what prosecutors describe as a criminal enterprise operating between December 2025 and April 2026. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Illinois, members of the group allegedly made multiple trips to a warehouse in downtown St. Louis, stole vehicles and other equipment, then transported the goods across the Mississippi River into Illinois to hide and sell them. Weinhoeft. “This case shows what happens when federal, state, county, and local agencies on both sides of the river refuse to let a geographic boundary become an impediment to bringing offenders to justice.” Perhaps the most interesting piece of the puzzle is that very few of the vehicles in question would disappear easily into traffic. The Department of Justice specifically identifies a 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle SS, a 1937 Ford dirt track race car, another unidentified white race car, numerous motorcycles and, because apparently someone needed something to load everything with, a 1997 John Deere 6675 skid steer. Local reporting based on earlier court records paints an even wilder picture. The allegedly stolen inventory included a 1960 sprint car, a Formula 3 race car, an Indy race car, a Yamaha 650 dirt bike and no fewer than 20 Bultaco Astero motorcycles. Investigators reportedly traced online posts advertising some of the stolen vehicles and other items for sale. The defendants now face varying charges including conspiracy against the United States, sale or possession of a stolen motor vehicle, and interstate transportation of a stolen vehicle. The indictment remains an allegation, and all 11 defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Lead Image: Chevrolet SS on Bring A Trailer For Illustrative Purposes
