We are beyond excited to see the Nissan Xterra return. It's been too long since the automaker had a competitive off-road SUV, so the newest iteration of its famous nameplate should be welcomed with open arms. So far, Nissan hasn't offered much real information about the model – no powertrain specs, physical dimensions, or other capabilities have been revealed. However, we do know that it has rugged body-on-frame construction to rival some of the biggest names in the industry, such as the Ford Bronco.Unfortunately, the model probably won't be on sale for another couple of years. That's why we're putting together a list of off-road SUVs that you can buy today, if you can't wait that long. Here are all the possible Nissan Xterra competitors available for the 2026 model year. This list is organized by base price from cheapest to most expensive. 2026 Jeep Wrangler Base Trim Price: $36,035 2026 Jeep Wrangler Willys 392The Jeep Wrangler remains one of the fiercest competitors in the world of off-roading. Buyers love it for the rig's stock capability and the extensive aftermarket modification scene. A person can do almost anything with this SUV to make it even more of a beast on the trails. It's available in either two- or four-door configurations, with a suite of engine options. The base model comes with a naturally aspirated 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 that makes adequate power. Four-wheel drive is standard, and buyers can choose a manual or automatic gearbox. 2026 Ford Explorer Base Trim Price: $38,465 2026 Ford Explorer TremorThis list is primarily composed of body-on-frame SUVs to stay on level ground with the upcoming Xterra, but some unibody models are too good to pass up. For example, the current Ford Explorer has an available Tremor trim level that's worth considering. It's still a three-row family-hauler, but the off-road-oriented version adds all-terrain tires, a more powerful engine, and more. The table above shows the model's base specs, but the Tremor trim costs at least $48,965 before destination. It has a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 that makes 400 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque, as well as an off-road-tuned suspension. 2026 Nissan Pathfinder Base Trim Price: $39,900 2026 Nissan PathfinderStaying in Nissan's lineup means picking the next obvious choice: the Pathfinder. This model aligns more with the Ford Explorer and other unibody SUVs. Like the Explorer, the Pathfinder is available with an off-road trim level. The Rock Creek grade is more rugged than the standard model and upgrades such as standard all-wheel drive, an off-road-tuned suspension, all-terrain tires, a tubular black roof rack, and more. Choosing the Rock Creek trim means spending at least $45,000, which is still less than the Explorer, and likely more affordable than what the new Xterra could cost. 2026 Ford Bronco Base Trim Price: $40,495 2026 Ford Bronco Badlands WildtrakMost likely, the upcoming Xterra's direct rival, the Ford Bronco, makes for some stiff competition. Since its return to Ford's lineup for the 2021 model year, the current Bronco has given models like the Jeep Wrangler and Toyota 4Runner a run for their money. Buyers can opt for either a two- or a four-door configuration and choose among seven trim levels. Every trim has standard four-wheel drive and body-on-frame construction, and some trims offer a seven-speed manual transmission. While most trims make do with a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, the Raptor variant takes it up a notch with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 making 418 hp and costing $79,995. 2026 Toyota 4Runner Base Trim Price: $41,870 2025 Toyota 4Runner TrailhunterOne of our favorite choices in the current off-road SUV segment is the Toyota 4Runner. It offers a great balance in terms of sizing, power, capability, style, and reliability. Buyers can choose between two powertrains: a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder, as seen in the table above, and a hybrid version of the same engine that makes 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. Fortunately, even the most basic trim has available part-time four-wheel drive. For the most capable versions of the 4Runner, the Trailhunter, and the TRD Pro, buyers are stuck with a hybrid powertrain. Both options have their own benefits, like the Trailhunter's Old Man Emu suspension or the TRD Pro's Fox setup. 2026 Honda Passport Base Trim Price: $44,950 2026 Honda Passport TrailSport EliteAnother worthy unibody SUV that we feel deserves a spot on this list is the Honda Passport. Every trim comes with standard all-wheel drive, but the most capable version is the TrailSport trim. It's selling like hot cakes for a reason: the TrailSport lineup competes directly with Subaru's Wilderness trims, but does it even better. In the Passport's case, buyers get the same engine found in the larger Pilot and the Ridgeline pickup truck, and its off-road trim gains off-road-tuned suspension, an integrated trailer hitch, and comfort features like heated front seats, tri-zone climate control, and more. 2026 Rivian R2 Base Trim Price: $48,490 2026 Rivian R2 Set for delivery this spring, the Rivian R2 is one of the most anticipated electric vehicles of the last few years. It's built to the same degree of comfort and capability as the already-popular R1S, but it comes in a smaller, cheaper package. The R2 is a two-row model with a smaller footprint to fit down tighter trails. Powering it is either a single motor on the rear axle or two motors that make up to a combined 656 horsepower. The single-motor model is impressive for an EV, but the dual-motor trims can tow up to 4,400 pounds, have a 1,168-pound payload capacity, and offer more drive modes to tackle rough terrain. 2026 Toyota Land Cruiser Base Trim Price: $57,600 2025 Toyota Land CruiserReturning to a rugged body-on-frame SUV, we have the Toyota Land Cruiser. This model is probably bigger than we can expect the upcoming Xterra to be, but it's a close match for those who want a tall, comfortable ride with as much capability as the smaller 4Runner. The Land Cruiser is only available in two trims, but both have standard full-time four-wheel drive. The cheaper model has center and rear locking differentials, while the more expensive trim has Multi-Terrain Select, which includes drive modes for dirt, sand, mud, rock, and deep snow. 2026 Land Rover Defender Base Trim Price: $63,500 2026 Land Rover Defender OCTAThe Land Rover Defender is among the more expensive rivals in the off-road SUV world, but it is highly capable and well worth the cost if you can afford one. On the cheapest end, there's the Defender 110 S at $63,500 before destination and options. It's equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes enough power to keep up in modern traffic. The SUV also comes with Terrain Response, which makes it more capable off the pavement, 8.9 inches of ground clearance, and the ability to wade through 35.4 inches of water. For the most capability, check out the OCTA variant for at least $158,300. 2026 Lexus GX Base Trim Price: $66,285 2025 Lexus GX Overtrail+Finally, we have the Lexus GX. It's not nearly as expensive as the most capable Defender, but this is certainly an off-road SUV for those who prefer to see the countryside while wrapped in leather seats and the best modern tech Lexus has to offer. It doesn't mess around with any hybrid systems, either; all GX trims use the same twin-turbo 3.4-liter V6 that makes more than enough power. This body-on-frame model can tow up to 9,096 pounds in the 550 Overtrail trim, has standard full-time four-wheel drive, a limited-slip locking center differential, and much more.Sources: Nissan, Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Land Rover, Ford, Rivian, Jeep
