Only 2,048 GT500 fastbacks were produced for the 1967 model year, and standard examples routinely sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars. This particular car adds another layer of desirability through its documented ownership history and modifications carried out during Shelby’s stewardship. The GT500 began its life in California after being delivered to City Motors in National City. The original owners reportedly acquired the car through a contest before it later passed through the hands of racer Chuck Jones. Around 1999, Carroll Shelby and Stephen Becker acquired the Mustang, and Shelby went on to personalize the car with a period-style air conditioning system and upgraded headers fitted to the 428 cubic-inch Police Interceptor V8.The engine retains the Shelby-specific setup that helped establish the GT500’s reputation during the muscle car era. Equipped with an aluminum mid-rise intake and dual 600 CFM Holley four-barrel carburetors, the V8 was factory rated at 355 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. Many enthusiasts have long believed the official horsepower figure was intentionally conservative to avoid the insurance penalties often associated with higher-output performance cars in the late 1960s.AdvertisementAdvertisementPower is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission, one of 1,376 manual-equipped GT500s built for 1967. The car currently shows 59,000 miles, with approximately 4,000 added by the current owner, who has kept the vehicle in a private collection in Greece since 2011.Collectors are also expected to place value on the extensive documentation accompanying the sale. Included are an Elite Marti Report, Shelby registry certificates, service records, spare parts, and historical correspondence tracing the car’s ownership history and Shelby’s acquisition. Shelby’s signature remains on the glove box lid, adding another highly personal touch to the car’s provenance.Although the car is not a fully numbers-matching survivor and received repainting and engine work decades ago, its significance lies in the unusual combination of celebrity ownership, historical documentation, and direct modifications performed by Shelby himself. The auction closes May 18, with bidding already reaching €210,000.Via Bring a Trailer⚡️ Read the full article on MotoriousSign up for the Motorious Newsletter.
