Cadillac announced last year that it would be discontinuing the three-row mid-size Cadillac XT6, with 2025 being the SUV's final model year. The SUV sold 20,225 units in 2024, and 17,060 in 2025, which, to us, look like solid enough numbers to keep the car around, but the luxury brand is serious about this electrification thing, even after dialing back its expectations, and the XT6 doesn't get them any closer to battery-powered supremacy. The XT6 is notable for being the safest vehicle Cadillac ever built in any segment. It's the only Cadillac to have scored a Top Safety Pick+ award this decade, and, seeing as the Insurance Institute's tests only get more difficult, year after year, this means that the XT6 runs uncontested for the title of 'Safest Cadillac Ever.' This, paired with its roomy interior, reliable powertrain, and low price, make it a gem of a family car in our book. The 2022 XT6 Is As Safe As A Cadillac Gets Cadillac For 2022, the criteria to earn a Top Safety Pick+ award included the following. Good rating in driver-side small overlap front testing. Good rating in passenger-side small overlap front testing. Good rating in original moderate overlap front testing. Good rating in original side test. Good rating in roof strength and head restraint tests. Advanced or Superior rating for available front crash prevention. Acceptable or Good rating for headlights. The 2022 Cadillac XT6 aced the test in more ways than not. Here's what the SUV's report card looks like. The XT6's single Poor rating is owed to unimpressive rear passenger torso injury measures in the updated side impact test, although the SUV scored a Good rating on every other point for this test. The 2022 Cadillac XT6 Is Reliable, Too Cadillac For 2022, the Cadillac XT6 earned a Quality & Reliability rating of 85/100 from J.D. Power. The SUV has been recalled three times, but it never generated a recall for more than a few hundred units. A June 2022 recall for a poor seal on a fuel tank rollover valve affected just 228 Cadillacs in total, including the XT6 along with the GMC Acadia. 159 Cadillac XT6s were included in a June 2022 recall for rear suspension toe links liable to separate. The 2022 Cadillac XT6's last recall was for 237 units with mislabeled brake fluid reservoir caps. That first recall is especially worrying, given the potential fire hazard, but the incidence rate is very low for all three of these recalls. It's never a bad idea to check the VIN when buying a used car, but don't be surprised to find that your new-to-you Caddie wasn't included in any of these recalls. What Will A 2022 Cadillac XT6 Cost You In 2026? Cadillac According to our price tracking tool, typical pricing for a used 2022 XT6 should run from around 50% to 60% of the car's original MSRP.We were able to turn up the following models from the 2021 and 2022 model years in our own marketplace. The most affordable model we can find is a 94,100-mile 2021 XT6 selling for $16,991 in Florida. A 33,140- mile 2021 XT6 Premium Luxury is selling for $24,440 in Texas. A 79,865-mile 2022 XT6 is selling for $20,690 in Florida. A 32,552-mile 2021 XT6 Sport is selling for $28,995 in Michigan. A 28,810-mile 2022 XT6 Premium Luxury is selling for $27,100 in Texas. These listings are provided just to give you an example of what's out there at various mileages. There's no telling what will be available when you're ready to shop around for an XT6 of your own.At these prices, our advice would be to budget around $25,000 for the purchase, and look for something with less than 75,000 miles on the odometer. Luxury cars tend to depreciate quickly, so it's sort of a buyer's market out there, with sellers looking to offload these vehicles before the price drops any further. The Cadillac XT6 Is Low-Maintenance (For A Luxury Car) Cadillac If you really want to drive a luxury SUV that won't have you spending much money on maintenance, you'll probably want a Lexus NX. But, if you've always dreamed of owning an American luxury car, the XT6 is fairly low-maintenance for one of those. RepairPal estimates an annual maintenance cost of just $783, with the following listed as the most expensive common fixes. Air bag clockspring replacement $615 - $672 Brake booster replacement $580 - $814 Control arm replacement $313 - $336 Blower motor replacement $313 - $336 Drive belt tensioner replacement $204 - $273 Cadillac Has Plenty Of Courtesy Vehicles Left, If You Want A 2025 XT6 Cadillac Check the Cadillac inventory page, and you'll find that the dealers still have plenty of basically-new XT6 models left, with some marked below $45,000 from a base MSRP of $49,195. The catch is that these are all courtesy vehicles, meaning they were used to cart customers around while their own vehicles were being serviced, so it'll have a few miles on it, but it's owned by the dealer, meaning it was probably meticulously maintained throughout its scant months of service. The 2022 Cadillac XT6 Is An Excellent Family Car, But... CadillacThe 2022 Cadillac XT6 is very easy to recommend as a family car, given its safety and reliability specs and its spacious, comfy interior, but the truth is that we've always found the car a bit underwhelming from a performance standpoint, even in the all-wheel-drive, V6 Sport model. For the price, the 0-60 takeoff is pretty mediocre, even for an SUV this size. The steering feels numb at times, and can be a bit twitchy, inspiring little confidence around corners. The ride is smooth enough, although the Sport's stiffer springs can be a little too bouncy at low speeds, and a little too floaty at high speeds. The BMW X5 May Be Preferable For People Who Love To Drive BMW If you're not all that concerned with whether or not a car is "driver friendly," and you're just looking to drive the family around in style and comfort, an entry-level XT6 could be perfect. If you want something that's actually fun to drive, the 2022 BMW X5 might be preferable. The X5 is not a perfect upgrade, but more of a trade-off. The Cadillac's third row is more comfortable, and it's cheaper to maintain than the X5, which RepairPal estimates at around $1,166 a year to keep running. The Cadillac is also cheaper than the BMW.This isn't to say that the 2022 BMW X5 is a slouch as a family SUV. For 2022, the BMW scored a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS, with only the headlights holding it back from a perfect score, earning a Poor rating for the base headlights, and a Good rating for the Icon Adaptive Headlights option. This means that a 2022 X5 with the headlights upgrade is an IIHS gold medal winner in everything but name.So if you're keeping score, our biggest complaint regarding the Cadillac XT6 is that it's a bit bland to drive, and our biggest complaint regarding the BMW X5 is that the third row is a bit cramped for larger passengers. Besides that, they're both excellent, safe, luxurious mid-size three-row SUVs.
