A sports car from a non-luxury brand at this price point is not unheard of, as the the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X starts at $209,700 and the Ford Mustang GTD currently sells for over $325,000.ToyotaView the 3 images of this gallery on the original articleAdvertisementAdvertisementPreparing a dealer network to sell such a unique car like the GR GT, even one with previous experience selling the Lexus LFA over a decade ago, is a challenge. In fact, Toyota will not sell the GR GT through traditional Toyota showrooms. Instead, it will rely on Gazoo Racing Garages in its home market of Japan, and sell the GT through Lexus showrooms here in the United States."We've been studying, and we had to do a lot of homework because, frankly, it's a customer we've never seen in our stores, whether it's a Toyota or Lexus showroom," explained Jeff Bal, Director of the Sports Car Program for Gazoo Racing. "A lot of our dealer body has high-end franchises, but we studied and asked questions. Lexus knows how to handle the customer-first mentality."Find The Right BuyerToyotaView the 3 images of this gallery on the original articleBal stressed that Akio Toyoda, the chairperson of Toyota himself, issued a mandate that the GR GT is purchased by people who understand the car and will put miles on it, not people who will flip it for a profit. However, as we've seen with recent performance cars like the Ford GT, finding these customers is not a simple task. Following a lawsuit with John Cena, Ford famously put a two-year "no flip" clause on the Mustang GTD.AdvertisementAdvertisement"We have a long and detailed process of identifying the best qualified customers that fit the task, and place them with one of our 'GR Meisters' to start a relationship," Bal said. "The Meister will be the first point of contact; they will hold their hand from start to finish, not just delivery of the car. They're a friend for life as long as you have the car. Having a concierge and a Meister keeps that connection strong."Bal wouldn't divulge any of the specific criteria Toyota is looking for in a GR GT buyer, calling it his "secret recipe," but he said the Japanese automaker has learned a lot from other automakers and from dealers that own other franchises."It's not just household income or demographic," he stressed. "It's not an influencer so we see the car on their feeds." Bal even joked about a certain reality TV star-turned-entrepreneur who won't be getting a GR GT... unless she has a racing team Toyota doesn't know about. "There is going to be a lot of vetting. It's going to feel like an interview process for a customer."This story was originally published by Autoblog on May 27, 2026, where it first appeared in the News section.
