Image: BMW CanadaShell Recharge is the name of Shell’s EV charging network across both Canada and the US, and combines both chargers owned and operated by Shell as well as aggregated access to the likes of FLO, ChargePoint, Circuit électrique, BC Hydro, EV Connect Canada, and more. Now integrated into the My BMW and MINI apps, it means BMW EV drivers will be able to access the entire network through a single account, including in the US – and factor it into route planning along journeys.Alongside this, BMW drivers in Canada are also about to find it much easier to connect to the Tesla Supercharger network. Firstly, compatible Superchargers are now being added to the Shell Recharge network, meaning the Shell Recharge integration is going to deliver access to a significantly more unified charging network. On top of that, though, BMW is pushing for even greater access to Superchargers, namely through increased NACS compatibility. As previously reported, existing BMW and MINI models are already able to use Lectron Vortex Plus NACS-to-CCS DC adapters to charge at Tesla NACS stations; but now, NACS-compatible Tesla Superchargers will also appear in the vehicle dashboard and on the My BMW / MINI app as part of routing and search results. Furthermore, new BMW models in Canada (including the iX3 and the i3) are set to be factory-equipped with NACS ports, meaning direct Supercharger access without the need for an adapter. In other words, the majority of BMW and MINI BEVs will have NACS compatibility features by the end of this year. BMW confirmed this by saying: “BMW Remote Software Upgrades (RSU) will enable NACS compatibility features across most current BMW and MINI BEVs. With the exception of the original BMW i3 (I01) and MINI Cooper SE (F56), all BEV models will be Supercharger-compatible once software prerequisites are met. The NACS RSU will roll out by model; customers will be notified in the app and vehicle as updates become available.”The brand also added: “By unifying a broad network of Canadian and U.S. charging providers through Shell Recharge – and by enabling access to NACS Superchargers – BMW is making public charging more available, more transparent, and more convenient than ever before.”bmwgroup.com
