Belgian Group Says Tesla FSD Misreads Speed Limit SignsAutoGuide.comMarcus LewinskyFri, September 25, 2026 at 9:34 PM UTCAdd us on GoogleTesting Tesla's FSD around Brussels in July, the Belgian road-safety group Johanna.be reported that the system repeatedly drove over posted limits and moved to pass cyclists on cycle streets where passing is banned.belgian group says tesla fsd misreads speed limit signsJohanna.be, a group campaigning for pedestrian and cyclist safety, said it logged about 400 km (249 miles) over three days. Its drivers found that FSD ran above the limit in zones capped at 20 and 30 km/h while showing motorists a higher figure than the law allowed. Across most of the 30 km/h segments tested, the group said, the car held an average of 44 km/h. In many cases, according to the report, the screen confirmed the system had picked up a roadside 30 km/h sign yet still posted 50 km/h to the driver."It is akin to a passenger constantly reassuring the driver that the speed limit is 50 km/h in nearly every 30-zone through which they pass," the report said. The group's footage captures the same car pulling out to pass cyclists in locations where the maneuver breaks the rules.belgian group says tesla fsd misreads speed limit signsRegulatory review is already underway. RDW, the Dutch regulator, cleared FSD in April, and Belgium and several other countries followed; an EU-wide vote could come on October 6. Sweden and other member states have flagged the system's tendency to exceed limits, though the countries that approved it say the driver stays responsible for obeying traffic laws.AdvertisementAdvertisementFSD is "a learning system that continuously processes new and additional information," said Xavier Lesenne, who speaks for the Flemish government's transportation ministry. He added that the driver "remains 100% responsible" and must step in "should the system make an error or fail to correctly apply a traffic rule," and said Tesla data shows the technology "holds significant potential for accident prevention today."Tesla's own study this month concluded that FSD-enabled vehicles match surrounding traffic and do not speed excessively. The company did not answer requests for comment. Johanna.be has asked the Flemish ministry and RDW to revisit their approvals.Become an AutoGuide insider.
