Bentley has recently completed a new painting facility. It's called Paint Shop. No, it's not a particularly imaginative name. However, we can forgive that, because the new facility is going to let the company create some truly wild colors for its cars. That's not just a simple claim, either. Bentley sprayed one of its Continental GT S coupes in one of the new hues, and it's genuinely dazzling.Bentley Behold, Bentley's Spectraflair Paint Line Yes, you read that right, Bentley is calling its new line of paint colors that will be applied in the Paint Shop "Spectraflair." If it sounds familiar, you may be a Hot Wheels enthusiast. When Mattel launched Hot Wheels in the 1960s, it collectively called the candy paint colors used "Spectraflame." We're guessing the similarities are coincidental, but if some Bentley designer or marketer did that as a tribute of sorts, it would be a neat little nod to cool car color history.BentleyThe resulting color is certainly worthy of being a Hot Wheels tribute. Bentley said it started with an existing color called "Verdant," and then modified it. The exact changes weren't given, but it appears Bentley included a galaxy's worth of what looks like rainbow metal flake. As a result, depending on how the light hits the paint, you'll see highlights from the entire visible light spectrum show through the green. This variant of Verdant is what Bentley calls "Spectral Verdant," and it's one of many Spectraflair colors that will be available in the "By Mulliner" paint range.Bentley didn't just stop with the iridescent green, though. The company also added "Union Stripes" over the top of the car that line up with the Bentley badges. These were finished in "Ghost White Pearlescent" and look just as shimmery as the green. Bentley says that it took multiple days to complete the paint work on this car.BentleyNo exact pricing was given, but your bank account will surely need to be well-endowed to cover one of these fancy color schemes. Not all Bentleys will have access to paints applied at the Paint Shop just yet, though. To start, Bentley is only sending Continental GTs, GTCs, Flying Spurs, and examples of its upcoming EV through. The Bentayga will be added later. The Paint Shop Is Also Green Well, it's not literally green. In fact, there's a rainbow of colors on the outside of the building. However, Bentley did reveal that, in addition to providing wild paint colors, its new painting facility has been designed to be as environmentally friendly as possible. The two-floor building features ways to capture and redistribute heat created from operations such that no additional heating is needed for "two-thirds" of the year. Cars painted there will be finished using water-based primers instead of nastier solvents. Bentley claims waste will be reduced by 45% thanks to more accurate paint application, fewer masking materials, and monitoring of facility filters. Plus, a system is in place to burn up fumes to reduce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by a claimed 98%. CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters: Bentley has shown that it's a leader when it comes to materials and finishes in cars, particularly with regard to interiors. The automaker has started applying precious metals to some controls in some of its most exclusive vehicles, and it offers a wide range of veneers from common wood and carbon fiber to actual stone. Making sure that customers can have similarly unique and special finishes on the outside just makes sense in the competitive ultra-luxury space. The fact that Bentley is also working to make its unique features (and more ordinary ones) less impactful on the environment is a bonus.
