Volvo was the first major automaker to announce its plans to go all-electric. Things have obviously changed since then, not just for Volvo, but for pretty much every automaker. Now the CarBuzz spies have spotted a vehicle we had never expected to see. Volvo is testing a refreshed version of the XC60 crossover, with two oddly-shaped tailpipes poking out of the rear and a big filler door in the front to make it clear what will power this model when it hits the road. And it ain't just electricity. Older Model Getting Second Refresh In Quick Succession CarBuzz/Valnet The XC60 is one of Volvo's oldest models, with the second-generation of the SUV launching in late 2017 and a very mild facelift dropping late last year to try and keep it fresh. On the outside, at least, this one doesn't seem to have any major changes in store for the car either.Volvo has completely covered this SUV's grille. The hard plate instead of the soft wrap we're used to makes it look like a new Ford Escape more than it does a Volvo, but it still gives us some idea of what to expect. The grille will be renewed and reshaped, probably to bring it in line with the latest Volvo XC90 SUV, and the Thor's hammer headlights have enough tape covering them to suggest the lights will be new as well. There are no changes to the side of the vehicle, but there are plenty at the back. The tail shows what looks like a completely new lighting design, one that removes the traditional Volvo rear light that extends up into the pillars. But a closer look shows that to be tape, so while Volvo is making changes, it isn't about to drop that particular and longstanding feature.Don't be fooled by that big screen inside, either. While from some angles it does look like Volvo is adding a positively massive center display, it's really just the laptop that belongs to the test engineer in the passenger seat. The real screen is much smaller, and it looks like the prominent screen Volvo added to the XC60 last year.Volvo has covered up the dash with some fabric, though, which is a strong sign that there are changes. It is hiding something, at least, and if everything was the same it wouldn't bother. This Could Launch A 120-mile EREV CarBuzz/Valnet The CarBuzz spies tell us the biggest changes are going to be under the skin, where Volvo needs to hit Euro 7 emissions standards and is expected to greatly increase the PHEV's range. We're hearing 120 miles on electric power (using the CLTC cycle) will be possible. Coincidentally, that's the amount of range that Volvo's XC70 EREV built for China can deliver.Meeting Euro 7 standards could be a challenge for the brand. A few years back, Volvo stopped R&D into combustion engines and sold its stake in the joint venture that built its engines, converting its last combustion engine plants into electric motor factories.Still, Volvo isn't completely caught off guard. Last week, Volvo Cars chief engineering and technology officer Anders Bell spoke with CarBuzz about the company's gas-powered future. He said that the company will invest in "another round" of hybrids, and that it has partners it can work with.Expect to see the refreshed Volvo XC60 make its debut in the first half of 2027.Volvo XC60 (16)
