2027 Subaru UnchartedMotorTrendStrong value in base formQuick GT accelerationUseful EV rangeNot especially Subaru-likeLimited rear-seat practicalityBusy ride qualityThe Uncharted gives Subaru a smaller, more affordable electric SUV positioned below the Solterra and Trailseeker. Introduced for 2026, it blends useful range, available AWD, and Subaru-friendly capability with a sleeker, Toyota-influenced personality. The result is an appealing entry point into Subaru's EV lineup, even if it doesn't fully deliver the practicality and character we expect from the brand's best SUVs. Small electric SUV competitors include the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Chevrolet Equinox EV.What's NewThe Uncharted was introduced for 2026 and carries over unchanged for this model year. That includes pricing: The Uncharted returns with no price increase for 2027.What We ThinkThe Uncharted is quick, stylish, and reasonably priced, but it doesn't feel especially Subaru-like. Although it offers useful range and available all-wheel drive, it lacks the practicality, easygoing comfort, and the thoughtful packaging that define the brand's best SUVs. As a small electric crossover, it makes sense; as a Subaru, it leaves us wanting more.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe Uncharted's Toyota roots are obvious inside, where many controls, screens, and software interfaces feel borrowed rather than brand specific. The cabin looks good, but the infotainment system isn't as intuitive as Subaru's latest setup, and the small digital gauge cluster can frustrate.Practicality is also limited. The sleek roofline helps the Uncharted look sportier, but it compromises cargo room, rear-seat access, cabin storage, and outward visibility. We've only tested a more powerful GT model, and its dual-motor setup delivers strong, smooth acceleration. Still, the rest of the driving experience is less polished: The ride can feel busy, the steering artificial, and the handling short of what the quick powertrain suggests. The Uncharted works best as an affordable entry point into Subaru's EV lineup. It's appealing in some ways, but shoppers seeking a more complete Subaru EV may prefer the roomier Trailseeker.Top-Ranked Competitors:Ford Mustang Mach-EHyundai Ioniq 5Chevrolet Equinox EVMotorTrend TestedWe haven't tested the front-drive Premium model, but with 221 hp instead of the GT's 338 hp, it should be noticeably slower. Given that the dual-motor GT reached 60 mph in 4.6 seconds in our testing, we estimate the Premium FWD will land around the 7.0-second mark—adequate for daily driving but unlikely to feel especially quick by modern EV standards.AdvertisementAdvertisementFor reference, the 2026 Chevrolet Equinox EV FWD makes a similar 220 hp and reached 60 mph in 7.4 seconds in our testing. Dual-motor AWD Equinox EV variants make 300 hp and hit 60 mph in 5.7 seconds, still well behind the quicker Subaru GT.EV Range and ChargingThe Uncharted offers solid range, though it trails some key rivals on paper. The most efficient model is the FWD, EPA-rated at 308 miles, while AWD versions are rated at 287 miles. The more powerful GT AWD drops to 273 miles. In our Road-Trip Range test, the Uncharted GT AWD traveled 236 miles on a charge. That's a useful real-world result, but it also shows a notable gap between EPA estimates and sustained highway-style driving.Charging hardware is competitive. Every Uncharted uses a 74.7-kWh battery and includes battery preconditioning, which helps prepare the pack for faster charging in cold weather or ahead of a DC fast-charging stop.AdvertisementAdvertisementA NACS charge port is standard, giving the Uncharted access to Tesla-style charging hardware without an adapter. Subaru estimates a full Level 2 charge takes about 7 hours. On a DC fast charger, the Uncharted can charge from 10 to 80 percent in about 28 minutes. For context, the Equinox EV offers more EPA range, with 319 miles for FWD models and 307 miles for AWD versions. In our Road Trip Range test, the Equinox EV FWD managed 282 miles, while the AWD version reached 241 miles. That puts the Uncharted GT AWD close to the AWD Equinox EV in real-world testing, but behind the most efficient front-drive Equinox.Safety Ratings and FeaturesLast year's Uncharted received two Good ratings from IIHS in front crash prevention categories but also earned a Poor score for some low-beam visibility issues with its headlights. This year's model should perform similarly and could get an NHTSA grade, as well. Standard driver assists across the lineup include:Automatic emergency brakingBlind-spot monitoringCross-traffic monitoringAdaptive cruise control with road sign monitoringAvailable features include a subscription-based Traffic Jam Assist for slow-speed adaptive cruise control with lane centering.Cargo Space and Interior RoomCompared with rivals such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Chevrolet Equinox EV, the Uncharted offers more maximum cargo capacity with the second row folded but less space behind the rear seats when they're in use. Front legroom also compares favorably with both the Ioniq 5 and Equinox EV.TechnologyInfotainmentThe Uncharted skips a traditional hooded gauge cluster in favor of a 7.0-inch combination meter mounted atop the dash ahead of the driver. A 14-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard, along with dual wireless phone chargers and four USB ports.Sound SystemThe lower trims are equipped with six speakers from the factory. Subaru also offers an 11-speaker Harman Kardon setup.Available UpgradesAWD models bring a 117-hp increase in output and the extra quickness that comes with it. Buyers can also make the cabin feel a bit more upscale with available features such as power-adjustable and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats. Other available conveniences include a digital rearview mirror, digital key, and power-folding side mirrors.ValueStandard FeaturesThe 2027 Uncharted makes a strong case in entry-level form, especially because there's no price increase for the new model year. Even at the base level, Subaru's electric crossover includes a strong suite of safety tech, a large touchscreen, and useful convenience features such as a power liftgate, automatic high-beams, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and heated front seats.AdvertisementAdvertisementSubaru also gives the Uncharted more than just a low starting price. Like the brand's other SUVs, it pairs everyday tech and safety content with confident driving dynamics and some off-road capability. It charges relatively quickly, too, making it a well-rounded choice.Recommended TrimWe'd stick with the entry-level Premium FWD trim. It delivers the Uncharted's best range, keeps pricing in check, and still includes useful features such as strong safety tech, a large touchscreen, heated front seats, rain-sensing wipers, automatic high-beams, and a power liftgate. AWD models are quicker, but the base version makes the strongest value case.
