2027 Subaru TrailseekerSubaruSeriously quick accelerationSpacious, useful cargo areaComfortable, composed rideReal-world range disappointsRear-seat space feels compromisedCharging speed merely averageThe 2027 Trailseeker gives Subaru a more convincing option for buyers who still expect a wagonlike design and a little outdoorsy capability in their electric SUV. There's nothing radical about this EV, but it does a better job of translating the brand's familiar formula into an electric package.AdvertisementAdvertisementElectric SUV competitors include the Tesla Model Y, Chevrolet Blazer EV, and the Toyota bZ Woodland (95 percent the same as the Subaru). What's NewThe five-seat Subaru Trailseeker carries over unchanged for 2027, with pricing holding steady. Introduced last year, it slots above the Solterra with more power, space, and towing capability.Other electric Subarus include the Uncharted (bold styling, small interior) and Getaway (three-row SUV).What We ThinkThe 2027 Trailseeker is quick, comfortable, and more convincingly Subaru-like than the brand's other Toyota-derived EVs. Its wagonish shape, useful cargo area, standard all-wheel drive, and credible off-road ability make it a practical electric family vehicle with an unexpected performance streak.AdvertisementAdvertisementIts powertrain delivers impressive acceleration without disrupting the composed, smooth ride. A comfortable ride makes the Trailseeker easy to drive, even if its considerable weight and body roll discourage sporty cornering. The biggest compromises involve its merely adequate range and charging performance. The lack of true one-pedal driving, persistent driver monitoring warnings, and settings that reset after every restart add unnecessary frustration.Although the cabin is spacious in front and the cargo hold is usefully shaped, the high floor and limited foot room make the rear seat less comfortable for adults than its dimensions suggest. Still, the Trailseeker combines speed, comfort, versatility, and light-trail capability better than Subaru's previous EV efforts. We just wish it traded some of its abundant power for greater range.Top-Ranked Competitors:Tesla Model YChevrolet Blazer EVToyota bZ WoodlandMotorTrend TestedEvery Trailseeker produces an impressive 375 horsepower from its standard dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain. In our testing, a 2026 Touring model sprinted to 60 mph in a quick 3.9 seconds.AdvertisementAdvertisementFor comparison, the new 2026 Subaru Outback with the XT's turbo-four reaches 60 mph in 6.3 seconds, which is quick. Compared to a Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD (3.8 seconds) and the Trailseeker, though, it's left far behind.EV Range and ChargingRange figures should remain close to the 2026 model's numbers. The base Trailseeker Premium, fitted with 18-inch wheels, is rated for up to 281 miles of range. Models with 20-inch wheels are rated for up to 274 miles.Real-world results were less impressive. A 2026 Trailseeker Touring managed 223 miles in MotorTrend's Road-Trip Range test. By comparison, a 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV with a 279-mile EPA-rated range still managed 239 miles in the same test. The 2026 Blazer EV has a 283-mile EPA range, and we expect the Chevy would slightly widen its lead in the MotorTrend Road-Trip Range test.Every Trailseeker uses a 74.7-kWh lithium-ion battery and includes a NACS charging port, providing access to compatible Tesla Superchargers. DC fast-charging speed peaks at 150 kW (acceptable but not very fast), and Subaru estimates a 10 to 80 percent charge will take about 28 minutes.Safety Ratings and FeaturesThe Trailseeker receives a mix of Good and Acceptable ratings from IIHS, but also one Poor grade for headlights. No safety award is earned, but the Ford Mustang Mach-E gets a 2026 Top Safety Pick and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 gets a 2026 Top Safety Pick+.AdvertisementAdvertisementAs far as safety tech, standard active driver assist features on the Trailseeker include:Adaptive cruise controlLane keeping and centeringCross-traffic monitoringLane Change AssistBlind-spot monitoringDriver-focus monitoringAutomatic high-beamsParking sensorsCargo Space and Interior RoomThe Trailseeker offers considerably more cargo space than the Chevrolet Blazer EV, though that advantage comes at the expense of rear-seat legroom.TechnologyInfotainmentEvery 2027 Trailseeker comes with a 14.0-inch touchscreen featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A configurable 7.0-inch driver display and four USB ports are also standard.Sound SystemThe base setup comes with six speakers. Subaru also offers an 11-speaker Harman Kardon upgrade.Available UpgradesAvailable premium features include a glass roof, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats. Buyers can also add conveniences such as a digital key and hands-free power liftgate, along with two-tone exterior paint schemes.ValueStandard FeaturesWith pricing unchanged for 2027, the base Trailseeker remains a strong value. Every model is quick, roomy for a small electric SUV, and comes well-equipped with a 14.0-inch touchscreen, dual wireless phone chargers, and a broad suite of safety technology. Standard features also include rain-sensing wipers, power-folding side mirrors, a power driver's seat, heated front seats, and a voice assistant.Recommended TrimWe recommend sticking with the base Trailseeker Premium. It delivers the same 375 hp as pricier trims, offers the longest range in the lineup, and still includes plenty of comfort, convenience, and safety features.AdvertisementAdvertisementHigher trims add luxury touches, but the Premium makes the strongest value case.
